A mailing list I’m on is discussing how to responsibly dispose of laptop batteries in the UK. So far, nothing definitive has come up, and nobody anybody speaks to seems to have a clue. These things are as bad, if not worse, than mobile phone batteries (Which can be disposed of here, and help charities)

Thoughts and suggestions gratefully received. Read on for suggestions and links so far… Original Question from Jon: I am attempting to dispose of six [laptop batteries] and there’s nary anyone I can find who knows how. Not Hackney Council nor Islington, not their respective private disposal companies (who apparently accept car batteries - go figure that), not even (so far) http://www.wastewatch.org.uk

One suggestion (From Dave KP), relating to mobile phones was: Try these people http://www.recyclingappeal.com/uk/recycling.htm don’t know if they can help as they are mainly for Mobiles but maybe they can point you in the right direction.

Then Alis sent this: I’ve never found a place but here are some links that may help you find somewhere:

A big list: http://www.foe.co.uk/pubsinfo/infosyst/other_services.html

And on another note: http://www.nomoreaolcds.com

Bottom line is, there’s no definitive place to get rid of laptop batteries in any part of the UK. Any suggestions or information would be much appreciated.

[...] Recycling of computer equipment is a subject that recently hit the headlines (I think Apple got a bad wrap due to it’s weighting, when they’ve led computer recycling for a few years), but it’s been a problem for some years. I’ve had no joy since wondering how to recycle laptop batteries three years ago. [...]

These guys claim to offer a laptop (and presumably other types of ) battery recycling service and unlike a lot of PC recyclers, it’s open to general public use:

I’ve yet to try them out but I’m keen to get shot of the pile of laptop batteries I’m slowly accumulating…

If you live in County Durham, this website would seem to suggest that batteries should be disposed as like all other house hold waste. Due to a current lack of facilities.

Not really very reassuring, but hey if you live in Durham at least you don’t have to worry, as your council says its ‘ok’ ;)
