An open letter to Sun from a Merrill Lynch analyst (via /.) which merits a read.

I’ve previously mentioned Sun’s state of health before, and the Sunset strategy talked about in The City. In the 8 months since then, I’ve seen very little to encourage me about Sun’s future. As the open letter states, Sun really do need to think radical. To be honest, grasping the Linux thorn and describing upgrade and downgrade scenarios to/from Solaris would make sense.

They also, desperately, need to become better known as a solutions provider par exellence. Right now, they’re known as box shifters, for Solaris, and for Java. But their products on top of these services are few and far between. They should consider taking a leaf out of IBM’s book.
