valdisere_bw_car_and_tree.jpgSome time ago I started playing about with black and white photography (specifically Ilford XP2, which develops with the same C42 process used for colour photographs). During my recent Ski trip, I finished off the film, and with a nice scanner to pull the pictures in, I can show off some of my favourite pics.

On the right is a slightly longer exposure of the tree outside of our apartment: I snapped it at night time, just as a car shot by. It was my friend Stewart Claydon who suggested bringing our SLR cameras along. Indeed, the picture I quickly snapped of him isn’t too bad. Note the snow falling down all around: It snowed most of the week - about a metre a night at times.

The one second exposure of the view from our hotel came out ok, but not as well as I’d hoped: It would have been better in colour, as the light onto the pistes, with all the fresh snow, was a beautiful dark shade of blue.

Finally, Stew was rather taken by the structure and shapes of the tunnel running under Val D’Isere.

We also recently visited Stourhead, and I liked the lines and textures of this building in the higher part of the gardens. Portraits are made more interesting with an interesting textured background, and this one of Frances is nice, but the one of both of us gets the parents vote I understand…

So, it’s worth checking out and experimenting with black and white photography. I’m no expert, but I’m pleased with some of the results. The rest of the pictures are here. I’d be interested in any comments.
