A small URL at the bottom of the Monza Grand Prix qualifying times on ITV’s F1 coverage led me to live race timing from the official Formula 1 website.

Sitting watching the Grand Prix with the full race timing information, previously only available to the commentators and teams themselves introduced an interesting new element to the race. Several times we saw events happening before the commentators and TV director had spotted it: Pit stops, Fastest laps, and race positions. The detail too, such as track temperature, wind information and lap times was just awesome.

Truly superb to have that level of information available, and so promptly. I imagine that this service will only get more popular, so I imagine they have a pretty impressive server infrastructure to cope with the demand. Another good reason for a wireless network and a laptop too!

And finally, it’s excellent to see Rubens Barrichello win a race at last this season (Needless to say, I was hoping for Jenson Button, but it just wasn’t to be). Whilst I’m not normally a Ferrari fan, I make an exception for Rubens: He has to be the most genuinely happy and pleased driver when he wins, with a permanent smile on his face. As much as I have respect for Michael Schumacher, he lacks the passion so evident in Barrichello.
