As I previously mentioned, Today will be broadcasting from Glasgow tomorrow (from the Glasgow Science Centre), and I’m rather chuffed to say that I’ve managed to get a ticket for tomorrows broadcast (7am to 9am on Radio 4)
I’ve never before seen a radio show production, so it appeals to my geek sensibilities as much as to my political and current affairs interest, even when the early start is taken into account (doors open at 6am). I have - I’m pleased to say - seen a television show production, as I was lucky to be included in the audience for a broadcast of Question Time during the 2001 General Election Campaign with the political leaders.
I was doubly fortunate to be chosen for the audience with Tony Blair. Whilst my question wasn’t chosen to be asked (I had recently been punched in the head by a rather drunk Celtic support in Hammersmith (yes, London, not Glasgow!), and had a question to ask from the policemen who dealt with my assailant), nor did I get to make one of many points, I am heard (my laugh is a little distinctive) and could be seen waving my hand around from the back.
My vanity on being on national television aside, it was an interesting experience on both the political and geek aspects. It’s a real shame Blair’s answer to the “warmup question” on the millenium dome wasn’t broadcast, as it was revealing in his rather poor answer. It was a shame too that despite David Dimbleby’s excellent stewardship, one member of the audience ignored his request to limit the length of their answers, and prevented much of the rest of the audience making their many points.
Anyway, I’m very hopeful that there will be some interesting political debate tomorrow, and that some of the audience will be included in that. I’m also hopeful vast quantities of coffee will be available, because I’m going to need it at that time!
