It seems we’re just not destined to find a house. After having placed an offer and commissioned a surveyor (for the third time), we honestly thought we had found a place at last. It had everything we wanted, and just seemed ideal in many respects. Where it wasn’t ideal, we had considered and pondered and decided that the risk was worth it.
So we’ve just had a message from the surveyor to say that the house is simply riddled with rot, needs a new roof, and simply hasn’t been properly maintained. We knew there were problems, and suspected the vendor was simply unaware of them, but it seems not only were they unaware, they were negligent in some respects. With at least £45,000 worth of work needed (surveyors guesstimate), on top of being in a conservation area (which means council approval for everything) it’s a lot of hassle even for a professional builder.
So we’re back at the drawing board. But that said, it’s not all bad. The market up here is looking a bit better than it had before certainly, but it’s still quieter than we’d like. Good places are getting snapped up quicker than ever.
