I spent Saturday afternoon, surprisingly Sunny as it was, in a pub with a wonderfully disparate group of folk whose only common thread was simply that we write weblogs, and have some connection with Scotland. Organised by Gordon of Scottish Blogs fame, we had folk from Belgium, America, Iceland, and even the odd Scot or two. Some even from Edinburgh…
Delightful to have met you all: Neil, Gunnella, Peter, Chameleon, Will, Corrinne, Steve, and Svetlana. I see that my cringing at the number of cameras in use didn’t get in your way, and there are some great photographs appearing. Unfortunately, I was somewhat sensitive on Sunday to anything really, so didn’t get around to putting anything up myself until now. As much as I love photography, I suspected there would be cameras aplenty, and chose to focus on my other specialised subject, rambling about anything that comes to mind, and – of course – drinking beer.
I think we were all a bit surprised by the music that appeared on the scene. As much as it was delightful to start with, it soon – to me – got a bit repetitive and grating, particularly the obligatory silences when the singers started up. If it had been just a swift drink or two, it’d have been fine, but as we all wanted to talk and listen to each other, it soon got in the way. The only consolation I have is that The Blackfriar would have been noiser still, as they frequently have live bands, and louder music, and that Babbity’s is usually much much quieter. I’m not sure the curious inquisitor understood what we have in common with each, but who knows, maybe it’ll eventually click….
Anyway there’s something particularly enjoyable looking back to spending time with such wonderfully diverse people, from such varied backgrounds. I think there were a few folk – my better half amongst them – who just thought I was doing something altogether harmless in writing my weblog, and that nothing much would come of it. That I’ve made – I hope – some new friends who all had such interesting stories to tell, and had such different views of the world really made it worthwhile. A great afternoon. Cheers to you all.
Update – seems that Neil wasn’t kidding when he says he was a journalist. That trepidation I felt was unwarranted though, he’s written the whole thing up very positively.

Names I can’t do too easily given they’re not my pics. Figure they’ll probably appear as hangovers vanish….

[...] Despite occasionally being distracted out by fiddling (stop sniggering at the back), I had a great time drinking with these complete strangers. There was organiser Gordon (hurrah for Gordon); fellow geek Richard; Gunnella, who taught us Icelandic pronunciation; Chameleon, who taught me the useful German phrase for "My friend will pay" and who, it turned out, I’d seen on University Challenge but a few weeks earlier; Peter of Naked Blog fame, who offered me what purported to be a vitamin C tablet which I gratefully accepted despite having met him ten minutes earlier; Neil, of Neil Writes the World, and Corrinne of Little Blue Teacup. Judging from the match report, I missed Steve and Svetlana, who arrived shortly after I headed off for a Chinese. [...]

Thank you for the tips on how to make better use of my D-70S – I intend to use what I learned again to retake some shots in a Metro station here in Waffle Central. I am pleased with the portrait of you I took without the flash (on RB as well as in the Flicker group). Hope to see you again at the next blogmeet!

Ta, Richard.
I sort of had imagined you would look a bit like yourself. That’s an oxymoron for you.

[...] Good to see another Glasgow blogmeet has been proposed on the 7th October – suitably far off that it’s very hard not to squeeze it into diaries. I had a great time last time (was it really a year ago!?), finding the folk who came along affable, friendly and entirely agreeable people with which to spend an afternoon (ok, afternoon and evening). Here’s hoping then that it’ll be a good turn out again, from folk near and far, who fancy meeting up with other webloggers. [...]
