Ah, the smell of freshly opened computer packaging has to be the opium of the geek. That or a specifically engineered pheromone that targets the geek in us all (come on, everyone has an inner geek of some description)
You see, I finally succumbed to a new Mac Book Pro. Ordered it on Wednesday, and it turned up today (Get the detailed tracking info here). Not bad turnaround all said, especially when I got all disheartened by the 3-7 business days and original ETA of the 13th July. Now that’s awful for any geek.
Unfortunately, I neglected to clear down my old, tired, and very battered Titanium Powerbook G4 (800Mhz of G4 sluggishness compared to the 2Ghz of dual core wizziness I have awaiting me). So it’s taking ages to copy my old accounts across and I’m stuck doing Real Work when I could be “working” downstairs (I can’t classify using a brand new computer as work, hence the quotes)
The result is getting on with work, and posting weblog entries.
I have to say, the great thing about buying a Mac is that it’s a great experience from the moment you tear open the shipping packaging. They clearly want you to enjoy the process of opening the carton, and cooing over the way it’s all laid out, right down to the well laid out box containing “the manuals and CD’s” - the “Getting started” guide is right on top. And, of course, that first touch of the new computer itself. Marvellous as it boots up, and plays it’s little “Welcome to Tiger” intro screen. Oh, and how the magnetic power cable just attaches itself… Mmmm.
Plus I’m sure there must be a special pheromone that targets the inner geek. The smell of it all is just great. Brings back all sorts of memories of unwrapping christmas presents.
Do feel free to ping me on iChat to try out the built in iSight. Details here. Apologies if I keep smiling and unsettling you

[...] As I mentioned yesterday, part of the fun with Apple is the care they take in designing the packaging. There’s even a new Styrofoam design from Apple too, which is quite wizzy. The experience is really quite cool, and the sleek packaging very convenient. I could have bought this thing a couple of weeks ago when I was in London, and carried it back on the train with no trouble. [...]

Loved the title “I love the smell of packaging in the morning,” - could have
been a better piece of writing without all the jargon…
Go see Kevin Smith’s Clerk II (currently showing in a reputable theatre near
you) - it’s warm witty look into the world of the Geek/Clerk
See you
