BBC trailers, and miscellaneous advert music
Posted by: Richard in BBC, Formula 1, Media, Music, PersonalI always feel quite chuffed when I recognise a piece of music in an advert, especially if it’s from somebody more obscure. Saab are, I think, using one of Aphex Twin’s tracks (”Shiny Metal Rods”, from Selected Ambient Works Vol 2), I think we all discovered a new talent in José González with the Sony Bravia adverts. Also, More4 are using “No more sweet music” from Hooverphonic’s album of the same name, for their trailer for “The Swenkas”.
“They” say that every one of Moby’s tracks from “Play”, was used in an advert in some capacity, primarily car adverts I think. Also, a real shame about ITV’s choice of music in their F1 coverage – out of context from Moby’s album, and utterly inappropriate for F1 I think: It’s too “airy” and “inspirational”, rather than down, dirty and a spot more aggressive: Bring back Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”! Even the rather lacklustre Jamiroquai track they commissioned was better.
But most recently the BBC’s music selector seems to have fallen quite sizeably for Sigur Rós, in that they’ve made huge use of various tracks from their album Takk for Planet Earth, the Wimbledon build up, and – spotted this morning – a new nature program. Funny. Well worth checking the band out though. Excellent stuff.
Update
- http://www.commercialbreaksandbeats.co.uk is a great website for more information about music on adverts that folk might find of use/interest.
Tips on searching for your advert
- Comments are now most-recent first, as that’s people are frequently most interested in.
- There are a lot of comments, so use your browser’s search feature to find the track you’re after. If it’s not on the page you arrived on, open the complete post by clicking here, and then search in your browser by hitting CTRL-F (or Option-F if you’re on a Mac) and type in a keyword about the advert and click OK!
- There may be some other links available which could be helpful.
- Remember many of the tracks you read about here are available in the iTunes Music Store
- There’s another thread on this very website with more adverts and answers!
Comments
- I’m sometimes away from a computer, and sometimes disable comments. If you’ve got an answer to somebody’s question, or want to ask one yourself, please first try to use the ‘Leave a Reply’ form at the very bottom of the page. If that’s not there, try using the Contact form on the top-right of the page to let me know the details of the track, and I’ll post them when I get back.

Hi, Can any of you help me please?
Ok, This may be a tough one!
The song I need to find the name of may have been on one of George A Romeros films (possibly Dawn of The Dead) and I know for sure that is was on a recent BBC advert that had Chris Moyles on it but I’m not sure if it was for a new Radio event of an actual Televised production… Aside from that all I can do is try to describe it as I have absolutley no I idea who made it but I want to find it… It starts of with a sort of plinky electric sound which then builds up into a happy fast paced rythm (it’s tricky actually trying to remember it aswell, but it’s deffinatly one you have all heard… Just trying to name it is proving a real problem) Please help I’m going mental here, THANKS

Just to let folk know I’m aware this post has got a huge number of comments, and many of you have subscribed up to receive updates in your mailbox. Hopefully you’re still finding it useful!
Just wanted to say, if you want out you should have an easy way to unsubscribe (see the details at the bottom of the e-mail), but if that doesn’t work, just drop me a line at http://www.leyton.org/diary/contact/ and I’ll take care of it.
I’m going to let the thread carry on running – I know how frustrating it is to not know a particular piece of music when you hear it! I’m keeping an eye to make sure it all stays relevant. Let me know if not.
Regards,
Richard.

Hi,
Not sure if these have been answered but someone wanted to know the music from the BBC drama “Recovery” trailer – I think it’s “You do something to me” by Paul Weller and it might be an acoustic version as it sounds different to the version on his “Stanley Road” CD. Also I think the Carlsberg music is “Spooky” by Dusty Springfield.
Hope this helps.
Steve.

Tough 1 for anyone out there, about 10-15 years ago ITV played atrack quite a few times, always in the late evening 12am onwards. It was quite a dark track and the female lead singer had a sort of spooky Shakespears Sister look about her, all i remember is I liked it and it seemed odd that they would repet play this video on its own without any programme or commentary attached. Heres hoping I have struck gold from the mud !!!!!!!
February 26th, 2007 at 6:04 pm

Hi there!
I’ve been going mad trying to find out what the music is on an orange advert that could be up to ten years old. It features a guy in a black suit, who looks a bit like the guy in the BT ads now, leaving his house saying hi and morning to different people. He then is on a train and you see out of it’s window a depressing brown inner city american building. The music is instrumental and sounds like its played on a xylophone or something (low and depressing).
Please help!

March 18th, 2007 at 10:07 pm
Hi everyone,
Been reading through everyone’s contributions and many have now saved me going mad, especially the song “little yellow spider” which I love!
I have a couple of songs, the titles of which continue to elude me and I wonder whether I could get some help?:
The first used to be on a Vodafone advert I think, it has a tinny, electronic sound and is in fact a very often used tune for scientific documentaries and so on – to my mind, it sounds like something you should play at a fairground but has a slightly weird, spooky tone and is fairly slow paced. Sorry to be vague, but it is hard to describe.
The second is the music for the current Challenge TV advert for three programmes by the same entertainer “threesomes”. It sounds like a Eurovision entry but I cannot seem to find it. Really catchy though!
I am reallyn grateful for any and all help!
March 18th, 2007 at 10:12 pm
Hi again,
Found the Vodafone one – it is called Waltzinblack by The Stranglers!
Hooray!
March 19th, 2007 at 12:08 pm

Hello everyone again
I would like to know if anyone knows this:
i don’t know if it’s a piece of music or just part of a song which has lyrics.
It’s in the bupa advert that i’ve only recently seen.
It doesn’t have words but there is a kinda chant thing going on like do-do do-do do-do do dooo do-do-do do. (haha like THAT’s going to ring a bell in somebody’s head!)
I remember it was also in the short disney pixar film (the one with the snowman trying to escape from his snowglobe) played before a toy story movie or something on the dvd.
I’m sorry i haven’t got a better description but that is really all there is to say about it!
It’s just really bugging me, and i wondered if anyone knew the name of the music/song and who it’s by!
Thank you
Sophie!!!!!!!
March 19th, 2007 at 9:37 pm
Don’t worry – found it!
It pays to look for these things yourself first!!!!
For anyone who wants to know (BUPA advert)
The disney pixar animated short film is called ‘KnickKnack’
The music is by Bobby McFerrin and is funnily enough called…knickKnack! lol!
March 20th, 2007 at 11:45 am
I’m back… i’ve tried offering love, money and all the tea in china, but so far hell is about to freeze over and the cat doesn’t stand a chance.
Does anyone know the piece of music used on the ‘BBC News WAP/delivered to your Mobile’ tv advert?
It’s strapline is ‘Whenever you need to know’. It’s really doing my head in that no one has ever heard of it.
Thanks Matt.

can anyone help – who sings on the BBC trailer for the sunday “politics Show”?
March 27th, 2007 at 7:53 pm
I can’t remember who asked for it but the “Friday Night Lights” theme song is, The “Friday Night Lights” Theme by W.G. Snuffy Walden.
Although Explosions In The Sky did the soundtrack for the movie, and have a few tracks included in the series.
March 27th, 2007 at 11:45 pm
Does anyone know the name of the song in the new sky movies ad? It’s mainly whistling. Have spent ages looking for it!
March 28th, 2007 at 2:49 pm
This may sound strange but I have been trying to find a song which is used regularly for program trailers usually on the BBC (as far as I know) but with no luck. It has suddenly appeared again and is currently beeing used as background to the trailer for a new cookery program featuring James Martin. I have no idea what the title is only that the words are something like ‘put your hands together, I want you to get together’. The singer sounds a lot like Nina Simone. Can anyone help it’s driving me crazy??!!
March 28th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
The rush hour thing has been bugging me for ages. I tried emailing the BBC and they didn’t know and then said some bollocks about licence fees and they didn’t have the resources to find out. This from the people who give Jonathon Ross 18 million a year! Maybe someone else could try emailing the BBC as I’ve already done. UYou neve know they might get fed up and give us an answer
March 28th, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Does anyone know the title/singer of the catchy song used on Challenge TV to advertise it’s “threesomes” programmes?
March 28th, 2007 at 9:55 pm

Hi Guys,
Please put me out of my misery, the Channel 4 advert for The Passion of the Christ has a fantastic piano track playing over it. I know the track but its been 4 days now and it still hasn’t come back to me.

March 29th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
MikeL857: You’re going to kick yourself – it’s “Concerning The UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois” by Sufjan Stevens from Illinois. An amazing album and one of the most sublime tracks. Go… put it on now… enjoy!
March 29th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
Alex you are a star. I knew I recognised it, I had it as my MySpace profile song for about 2 weeks. Introduced to his music by Fields, they gave away a summer compilation cd on their site a few months ago and it had Sufjan on there, together with some other very interesting bands.
Thanks I can sleep tonight now.

Ok this is completely vague but its doing my head in and i’ve even been having dreams where i whistle this tune to people and they all make guesses at it. PLEASE help.
all i’ve got: it was the background music (no lyrics, just a moody melody) to an advert for film 4, which went through a number of new and old film clips, cutting in some words and whatnot, in about mid-March, and one of the movies advertised was I, Robot.
Thanks!!!
March 31st, 2007 at 5:48 pm
I need to know what the music was called to a late 90’s BBC documentary show called Macintyre Uncovered. The BBC use this theme all the time, normally when showing trailers for upcoming documentaries. It is a piano piece not dis-similar to the Bjork ‘Play Dead’ track. This is so doing my head in as I cannot find it anywhere.
April 2nd, 2007 at 12:21 pm
Aaron,
You’re a legend thank you!!! I saw it again last night and it drove me mad all evening trying to think.
Thank you
A very appreciative Jayney

April 4th, 2007 at 2:39 pm
I know this is quite a long shot, but this forum is so useful! i went to the cinema the other day and the trailer for SUNSHINE came on. the music was orchestral and very powerful, and it’s quite common on all sort of big, epic, thriller movies. but i absoloutly love it! can anyone help?
April 4th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
Hi Harriet,
Glad you like the page
– Everybody has been so useful, and it’s grown to be the most popular page on the website. Keep it up. Pleased this is one I can help with….
First, You can see the trailer here.
I gather it’s called “Requiem for a Tower”, and has a bit of a history in a few films. Composer is Clint Mansell:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clint_Mansell
You can get a sample of the original here from his website:
http://www.clintatthecontrols.co.uk/clintatthecontrols/audio/3/13.mp3
More details at the sunshine film website, where it seems it’s quite a popular question. Also featured in Lord of the Rings too I gather. So, must be good
April 4th, 2007 at 8:25 pm
Hello,
The music in Sunshine, Requiem for a Tower, has been sampled by Paul Oakenfold on his Bunkka album in the song Zoo York.
It is quite good although i do like the full on orchestral version a little more. The cover sheet mentions that it was sampled from Sagoo, Indivar & Kalyanji and sample kicks in at around 1min 45secs at a slightly faster tempo than that of the orchestral version.
Hope this helps,
Adieu

April 6th, 2007 at 9:17 am
I’m still stuck on the music used by the BBC to advertise dramas and documentaries. The only programme that had it as a theme tune was the Donal Macintyre documentary series from the early 90’s called ‘Macintyre Investigates’. It’s a piece that sounds similar to the Bjork track ‘Play Dead’ and is an orchestrated track with no vocals.
Does anyone have an idea, please, please?
April 7th, 2007 at 12:02 pm

April 21st, 2007 at 5:13 pm
@Alex – April 11, 2007 @ 1:43 pm
The music used on the More4 trailer for Nick Broomfield’s Ghosts was a Sparklehorse track from the album ‘Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain’, but I don’t recall which one… I noted that around the same time another TV drama trailer was also using a different track from the same album, but I can’t remember the drama or the track!
@sleeve – November 19, 2006 @ 7:20 pm
Grandaddy’s a.m. 180. from Under the western freeway is indeed awesome, and is used regularly in programs and trailers – Charlie Brooker’s TV show uses it as it’s theme, and, possibly more weirdly, it was used in the trailers for Clifford’s Puppy Days on one of the kids TV channels.
April 21st, 2007 at 10:30 pm
The song in the advert “Here comes the sun has been driving me mad” I’ve heard the Beatles version a thousand times and didn’t think it was that, but now I think it is, although carefully edited! Go to Shareaza and download the version that starts off with the Indian music. I think you’ll agree that it’s the same piece of music.
April 21st, 2007 at 11:18 pm
Demi xx; i think the song you’re looking for is ‘New Days’ by Asher Lane.

April 26th, 2007 at 7:03 pm
Hi All,
It’s so great that you’re all still finding adverts and the details behind them. You all deserve a huge pat on the back. Great stuff! Keep it coming.
A few things: 385 comments (and counting!) was getting a bit difficult to search, so I’ve switched on paged comments. The ‘Search’ button at the top of every page can help search through them too! I’ve also changed the order so that the most recent stuff appears first, which hopefully will make things a bit easier.
As ever, let me know if you don’t want to receive the e-mail that’s sent out when people post a comment. I’ll unsubscribe you, but you should be able to click on the link that’s at the bottom of every e-mail so you can switch it off if every you don’t want any more! Get in touch with me at leyton.org/diary/contact.
I’m going to try and reduce the number of times I send out new posts by batching them to go out only when there are a number of new, or interesting questions, or a great answer.
Oh, and you can see the Nike+ advert that emily refers to at: http://www.nike.com/nikeplus/. And if any of you fancy a Nike+ running challenge, let me know!
ttfn,
Richard.

Hey, me again… Yeah im still looking for the music to the BBC3 programmes advert. The advert isnt for one specific programme, its the one that BBC3 use to advertise all their leading programmes such as ideal, gavin & stacey, castaway, rush hour, help my dogs as fat as me, the panic room etc etc. Im pretty sure the music is quite recent and its a kind of indie style music. If anyone can help me, i’ll be very very greatful.

May 14th, 2007 at 5:48 pm
Izzi (post 302) and others: RE Flake summer rain music
Flake “Summer rain” ad music, I too found this beautiful and required to know whom it is by, so took the plunge and enquired with Cadbury’s: below is there reply:
I’ve asked the TV production and can confirm the composer is Alexandre Azaria. He is a French composer living in Paris. I’m afraid we don’t really have any other information on him apart from the fact that he has also composed music for the film ‘Transporter II’. The first composer for the original Flake piece of music was Ronnie Bond
Regards
Charlie Cadbury Consumer Relations Department
Hopefully the piece, or and other work by Mr Azaria will become available soon.
Best Wishes,
Phil

HELP!!
I have to find out what the piece of piano music the BBC seem to be using all the time is called.
It’s usually used in documentries or when something beautiful or sad is going on, on screen.
The piano music is very simple at the beginning but gets faster and is then accompanied by some sort of string music.
I’ve seen it usd on a Dr Robert Smith documentry and on top Gear when hammond is showing off a raing green roadster.
I know I know, how are we supposed to know what the hell your talking about.
Sorry I really need to find this piece of music.

response to comment 298 (S Pitchford)
The “hypnotic piano track” that you’re after is by “Moby” and calld “God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters”. It’s from the album Everything Is Wrong.
I KEEP hearing it on various TV trailers, and managed after an irritating amount of searching to find it. It was used at the end of Hunting The Taliban.

I’ve heard a soundtrack on the BBC recently which I first heard for the adverts they ran I think for Rdaio 1 ‘new music’ – its a slowish number, trancy in the Mogwai/Spiritualised/Arcade Fire mode, which has a chorus of people chanting repeatedly something like ‘ah ha’ and it gets louder with a wall of sound like bank of guitars; it really builds up.
If I remember the first time I heard for the ‘new music’ ads on the BBC they showed concert footage of the crowd jumping up and down in slow motion. I think the camara was panning from the rear to the front of the crowd.
It was the background music to something on the TV very recently. Please help!!

Update on my request (no. 456). The music I want was played tonight at about 10.50pm on Channel 4 during a break for the TV show, The Friday Night Project. Channel 4 are showing a trailer for the film ‘K-Pax’ starring Kevin Spacey which they are showing at the weekend. The music I want to know about was the background music for this trailer.

July 8th, 2007 at 9:26 pm
i know it’s not off an advert, and i’ve used this site quite a few times to find the music off various adverts, but i love this music and it’s on many thriller film trailers. the most recent of which is the new Danny Boyle film ‘SUNSHINE’. it’s orchestral and incredible. i need help! thanks x
July 10th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
@471 (Philip)
The music on the BBC DanceX advert is ‘Move Your Feet’ by ‘Junior Senior’. You can get it from iTunes.
July 11th, 2007 at 3:08 pm
This one is driving me insane. The music used on the “Science You Can’t See” season ad on the BBC. Piano/strings, possible classical? Unfortunately I’ve been unable to find any videos online. Pretty sure it’s been used elsewhere.
July 12th, 2007 at 10:31 am
In response to my own question: the song is either ‘Lux Aeterna’ from the Requiem For A Dream film score, or ‘Requiem For A Tower’ which is a derivative of the first and was just used for a Lord Of The Rings trailer.
July 14th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

Hi, was wondering if anyone knew the piece of classical music (string music) that was constantly used in the polar special of top gear and during britains got talent. Thanks in advance!
July 26th, 2007 at 9:41 pm
Hi, Richard (site owner) here. I’ve been contacted directly with a couple of questions, and I don’t know the answers myself so figured I’d pop them up here in the hope the impressive knowledge of you readers might help find the answer:
‘Gillian’ asked “I am trying to find out who the male guitar playing singer used in the background on the bbc programme A family Wanted, if you can help I would be very grateful”
‘Kate’ asked “please can you tell me the song used for the end montages in the golf open – had the words ” burning son” in it bu cant find it. thanks”
As ever, please let me know if you want to stop receiving e-mails, but you can follow the link at the bottom of every note and unsubscribe yourself.
And in case anybody is feeling generous, I’m running a half-marathon in early September. Sponsorship is always welcome!

Thanks, and keep up the great work with the adverts!
Regards,
Richard.

Does anyone know the name of Theme Music from Channel 5 ‘House’ starring Hugh Laurie. Thank you.
July 27th, 2007 at 11:33 am
Theme for House.
Found it – Teardrop by Massive Attack.
Thank you.
July 27th, 2007 at 11:41 am
mrs k – I’m a fan of House too, and can answer this one myself (a rare thing these days!).
As much as the Massive Attack track is a classic (and well worth digging out), it’s NOT the track they use in the UK broadcast of ‘House’. Probably licensing restrictions or somesuch.
So they have a different than in the US, which is what comes up in search engine hits. I gather it’s a specific track written for the show called ‘House’ by Scott Donaldson and Richard Nolan. Came across this myspace page with more.

Does anyone know who is singing “End of the World” in the Heroes trailers and stings on BBC2? Clip on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoSZLqyVE48.
I’ve ruled out Skeeter Davis, Julie London, Brenda Lee, Nina Gordon and Karen Carpenter. It might possibly be Nancy Sinatra, but the clip on itunes doesn’t quite match to my ears anyway.
July 28th, 2007 at 8:33 pm
Does anyone know the name of the music currently being used on the advert for BBC Four’s ‘Atom: Science You Can’t See’? I recognise it and know it has been used in a film recently, so it will help me remember what that was too!
July 29th, 2007 at 8:58 pm
Response to 488/Laura:
One of the rather striking pieces of music used on Top Gear’s Polar Challenge is from the movie ‘Requiem for a Dream’. It’s called ‘Lux Aeterna’ composed by Clint Mansell – listen to the sample on iTunes store to see if it’s the one you were looking for…
July 29th, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Does anyone know what the music is from the ‘Empire’s Children’ advert on Channel 4? Its like an acoustic guitar solo, really easy going. Tried loads of places to find it but can’t anywhere!!
July 30th, 2007 at 8:17 am
I asked the BBC who sings ‘The End of the World’ in the BBC Heroes trailer and it is Nina Gordon.
July 30th, 2007 at 11:23 am
I’d love to know the music trailer backing Griff Rhys Jones’ Mountains programme, too. Why don’t the bbc just put a list of current backing tracks on their website?
July 30th, 2007 at 1:20 pm
@472 (harriet)
The orchestral track used in the “Sunshine” trailer is called “Requiem for a Tower” by Simone Benyacar, Dan Nielsen & Veigar Mairgersso and it can be found on iTunes in three sections (three movements) on an album called “Corner Stone Cues”. Hope that helps, took me ages to find that myself.
July 30th, 2007 at 7:50 pm
I’ve got the Nina Gordon version of “The End of the World” and it doesn’t sound anything like the one on the Heroes trailer.
So I don’t think it is.
July 30th, 2007 at 9:17 pm
Just wondering what the song for the advert for the first episode of “British Film Forever” was. It was a very MOD song, well the bass line was with a bit of trumpet!!! I really want to know what it was because the bass line was SO catchy!!

does anyone know the sountracks used in “The Tower” BBC, i know that one is from Crash, but what are the others?
July 31st, 2007 at 9:51 pm
This is such a rewarding page!
I just found the music from the channel 4 ‘New Hollywood’ Trailer, for anyone whose interested; it is called section 17 (Suitcase Calling) by the polyphonic spree, but annoyingly, you can only get it on itunes if you buy the whole album.

Does anybody know the song from the newest “Supernatural” ad (From about August 2007).
I’ve been trying to find it out for ages. I even practically try and shove my head into the TV to try and catch lyrics so I can search it on google. But all I’ve been able to catch was “Rain” and “answers”, as the song is very up-beat, clubby, and echoed.
I’d really appreciate if someone would be able to help me out, I’m practically tearing my hair out with the fear of losing the advert, as I’d never being able to track the song again.
xXx.

I second Harriet’s request for the Extra Fusion tune. It’s the theme tune from Channel 4’s Transmission with T-Mobile too. I think they used it for their first series as well as the second. So it must be at least a year old. I am going nuts. I must have it.
I saw an article which said Wrigley’s were using Klaxons for the Extra Fusion ad, but I have my doubts that’s accurate. Not even a Klaxons remix could sound like this surely???
Thanks in advance!
August 8th, 2007 at 11:54 pm
I found it Harriet… it is a Klaxons’ track believe it or not. It’s “Gravity’s Rainbow (Van She Remix)”. I’m not sure where it can be purchased. It doesn’t appear to be on iTunes.

I would be extremely grateful if someone can help me with a piece of music from around 1984 played recently in a re run of Cold Case? It’s synth electro pop in the genre of A Flock of Seagulls/Howard Jones and the only lyrics I could catch from the male vocalist were “now i’m living in limbo oh- oh,oh-oh”.
I have never heard it before as I lived in Japan for three years so there is a gap in my musical knowledge, For example it was nearly 7 years before I heard/saw the video of Status Quo “in the army now” and thats one I wish I hadn’t.
cheers if anyone can help and I will watch this site to see if I can help anyone out…

This is in response to a question raised in your number 389
I am the producer/director of the film.
Contact me via my email, if you can. I guess you are talikng about the music used over the long intro sequence culminating in the air the air sequence.
I don’t know if I am using this site correctly but I hope this reaches you.
Tell me… do you have the early version of my film or the later version narrated by Richard Todd?
Kind Regards
Stan
Note from Admin – I’ve passed on a note to the author of comment 389. For others, the film here is ‘Shackleton’.

In response to post 530, sorry Janey, the music from the BBC4 advert for ATOM is not from The Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers soundtrack.
The trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers used a remixed version of the track “Lux Aeterna”, re-recorded with a full orchestra and choir. The song, named “Requiem for a Tower”, was made just for the trailer (it was not featured in either Requiem for a Dream or The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers) and was composed by Simone Benyacar, Dan Nielsen, and Veigar Margeirsson. In October 2006, the cue was released on the iTunes album release from Corner Stone Cues, titled “Requiem for a Tower”.

This has already been asked but nobody answered. Can someone tell me the music that was used in the BBC Three Family Guy advert back in July?
September 10th, 2007 at 11:26 pm
Answer for question number 503/506 from Richard regarding music used in the BBC programme ” The Tower “
The opera singers were Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman and they were singing ” Time to Say Goodbye”
I should be able to identify the piano concerto music I also heard when I find my CD (I only saw the last episode No. 6 so I do not know what other music may have been used)
Hope this helps
Jim

Hi, did anyone see a documentary on last night on BBC Three called How Dirty Can I Get? During the programme there was a piece of dance/electro music played twice with a strong baseline and some lyrics that are hard to make out. Ive heard it on trailers for tv programmes as well before too on Channel 4 I think. Would be really grateful if someone knows what it is?

bekbo – You can go to apple.com/ipod and click on the iPod Nano advert. You can then click through to the iTunes store and get the details of the song, but note that the ‘Buy it from iTunes’ takes you through to the US store.
Details are it’s by ‘Feist’ (off the Album ‘The Reminder’) and is called, you’ll be shocked to hear, 1234. It is available in the UK iTunes store too.

September 25th, 2007 at 9:29 am
I too would like to know that wonderful panio music played in the background of the programme ‘The Restaurant’ (Raymond Blanc) does anyone know??????????? Sounds alittle like Erick Satie
September 25th, 2007 at 10:39 am
Regarding the music from ‘The Restaurant’ – Whilst I don’t watch the programme regularly myself, I have caught excerpts at times and the music I’ve heard has almost always been music by Yann Tiersen, specifically the music from the film ‘Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain’, or ‘Amelie’ to the rest of us:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0211915/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amélie
Whilst the Amelie soundtrack is really delightful (I have a copy) – and probably what a you’re after – I wouldn’t suggest you rush out and buy any other music by Yann Tiersen without getting a proper listen first. I made the mistake of presuming it was all along a similar vein, and left a concert rather disappointed. My review here:
http://www.leyton.org/diary/2007/02/06/yann-tiersen-in-glasgow/
Regards,
Richard.
September 25th, 2007 at 10:52 am
Almu (comment 620) – Re. the trailer to ‘Lilies’ – I took a quick listen, and I can’t be absolutely sure, but it sounds a lot like KT Tunstall’s guitar work on ‘Suddenly I See’ from the album ‘Eye on the Telescope’.
September 25th, 2007 at 3:52 pm
Thanks Richard, I do have the ‘Amelie’ soundtrack and the piece used in ‘The Restaurant’ is not on the album. I am guessing its on another of his albums perhaps another film soundtrack. I will try and look into his other albums, I strongly believe its Yann Tiersen because of the minimilistic nature of the piano piece, he often adopts this for his piano compositions.
To Lelita, its definately not Erik Satie, who although is minimilist also, the music used in the restaurant is far too contemporary for Satie.
September 25th, 2007 at 4:34 pm
Several people are asking about the music used for the programme the restaurant. I would also like to know what the music is that is used at the begining of the programme, can anyone help me? I keep hearing snippets on various programmes.

September 26th, 2007 at 1:52 am
The music from The Restaurant is not Yann Tiersen. I have his discography and it not in any of these albums. I have submitted the question to the BBC via thier website and hope they will reply.
September 26th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
What is the music being used on the Tudors trailer, sounds like Depeche mode??
September 27th, 2007 at 9:53 pm
Guy, 559 – I know its been a while now, but I too have been trying to find that piano music since it featured in Dancex back in August, despite asking in various chat forums and trawling numerous websites, I’ve yet to find out what it is. Did you have any luck? Please answer if you did, would be very grateful. I’ve heard it since on Xfactor aswell, can’t get it out of my head! Thanks.
September 27th, 2007 at 10:05 pm
the music to The Restaurant is – Comptine d’un autre été l’après-midi – Amelie Soundtrack. It’s stunning
September 28th, 2007 at 11:22 am
The music I’m thinking of from The Restaurant is the soft plinky xylophone track that induces instant nostalgia and always comes in towards the end of th programme when they’re doing a review. Is this the piece people are after, or does anyone know the name of it? Thanks.
September 28th, 2007 at 11:12 pm
Guy,559.Success! I’ve found the piano music, it’s “Le Onde” (The Wave), by Ludovico Einaudi. Now I’ve heard it all the way through again, it’s even better than I remember! You can hear it on Youtube along with others, try Smokey Joes attempt (he’s only 15) wow.!! Happy listening
September 29th, 2007 at 1:02 pm
Bekkbo the song on the M&S ad with the train (if that’s the one you mean) is Ain’t She Pretty by Buddy Greco.
Suddenly I feel like Peter Pan is still annoying me but I think it was just written for the ad itself.
September 29th, 2007 at 4:58 pm

October 3rd, 2007 at 8:23 pm
Answer to 632 – the restaurant xylophone music. It sound like Gassenhauer by Carol Orff to me but I’m not 100%.
October 3rd, 2007 at 9:14 pm
640 Astrid, The music from the new Peugeot 308 advert was specially composed by a guy called Erwann Kermorvant. I dont know what the piece of music is called but the advert is titled “Winds of Change”. Hope this helps.
October 3rd, 2007 at 9:54 pm
In response to 632 and as a follow up to 645, the xylophone music on THE RESTAURANT is Hans Zimmer’s “You’re So Cool” which was based on Carl Orff’s Gassenhauser. You’ll probably recognise it from the film “True Romance” (it’s pretty much played throughout that).
October 3rd, 2007 at 11:03 pm
does any1 know the new tune for waterloo road on bbc one . Its the tune which is played during the advert to tell people that waterloo road is coming back. Its a very popular tune..
October 4th, 2007 at 12:58 am
Following on from 633…
For all those interested in the piano music used in the BBC’s ‘The Restaurant’, I’d like to say that it’s not ‘Le Onde’ by Ludovico Einaudi as suggested, although that is an excellent piece of music. I’m a big fan of Einaudi and I did initially think it could be his work due to the minimalist style.
I’ve just listened to an excerpt from ‘Comptine d’un autre été – L’après-midi’ by Yann Tiersen from the ‘Amélie’ soundtrack, as suggested by someone else, and that sounds spot on to me. I’m just buying it from iTunes now but I’m 99% sure that it’s the right piece.
I could be wrong – sorry if I am…
October 4th, 2007 at 6:52 pm
Response to 648 – I knew it wasn’t quite right – but I knew Orff was in there somewhere – thanks a lot, that’s really been bugging me !!
October 4th, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Following on from 650:

Hi All, Let me count myself among you all as one dying to find this tune – I too have listened to the Amelie soundtrack, and I agree with Ian, that this too sounds like both Le Onde and the latter track.
However I think its not. Unless… there has been a rearrangement. I have recorded from the TV show and played both possibilities side-by-side, and they do not fit.
As with someone else on here I too have emailed the BBC ….. 2 weeks ago.
Good Luck
Austin
October 4th, 2007 at 9:04 pm
I have the all of the Einaudi & Tiersen albums and some of Paul Glass. The music from The Restaurant is none of these. Have posted Q to BBC but no repsonse. Any help would be great as its driving me crazy.
October 5th, 2007 at 10:53 pm
I am desperate to find the music used in recent weeks by SKY MOVIES as background to their movie trailers. i haven’t heard in past couple of weeks though. Pretty sure it’s pure instrumental and is also used by other channels/progs. Will post a more specific comment if i hear it played again.
October 9th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

October 9th, 2007 at 11:49 pm
don’t suppose anyone knows the music from the p and o ad
October 10th, 2007 at 12:46 am
In reply to Bekbo post 656 about the P&O ad.( I’m assuming it’s the What, Why,Where one). The music is “Zadok the Priest” by G.F Handel. Hope this helps.
October 10th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
I don’t know if anyone can help with this but there’s a great piece of music used at the end of the 3rd and final program of the BBC’s ‘Secret Life of Motorway series. It’s right before the very end of the program over the top of Tony Blair and John Prescott flying over a motorway in a helicopter.
This piece is used alot on BBC programmes, and was also used over the end title sequence of last night’s (October 9, 2007) ONE Life programme on BBC1.
It is a repetitive piano piece *filling out into a fuller orchestra) which sounds a bit like Philip Glass but I’m fairly sure it isn’t since I;ve been through most of his music. Someone has also suggest Steve Reich but I haven’t found anything yet.
If anyone can help put me out my agony, then I’d grately appreciate it since this is a hauntingly beautiful melody which I’d love to have on my iPod!
You can listen to an audio snippet of it via this link (audio recording from Secret Life of Motorway)
http://www.spectroscopynow.com/FCKeditor/UserFiles/File/Temp/Secret_Life_Motorway_Music.WMA
Thanks in advance somebody – please help it’s driving me mad not knowing!
Nick
October 10th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
To Nick comment 658 …motorway music …an excellent description as i recoginised it without seeing the prog just checked out the snippet..it is God Moving Across The Face Of The Waters by Moby..used in countless ads, the end of Heat by Michael Mann woth Pachino/De Niro ( different arrangement, slightly more expansive)…and also arranged and played be me as wellas an intellectual excercise as i recognised some of the sounds used in it by Moby coming from a Yamaha SY99 synth…it isnt a real orchestra. If you are interested in my version email me at [e-mail withheld] and I will mp3 it to you
glad to hep Paul Burns
October 10th, 2007 at 2:37 pm
Wow – what can I say Paul – a huge, huge thanks for this!!
If you only knew how long I’ve been tracking this down, with numerous emails to various BBC departments and postings on several music query websites, and then you go and solve my puzzle within minutes of posting here!! It’s so difficult to find pieces when they don’t have lyrics isn’t it?! And to think that I have a couple of Moby albums (18 and Play), but not this one, well at least not until 5 mins ago when I’ve just placed an order for it from Amazon!
Mega thanks once again – my life is just that bit more complete today!
Nick

Hi everyone,
I know this isn’t strictly a song from an advert but i was hoping some one could help me. I’ve wanted to know the name and artist that does the amazin guitar solo to back the black eyed peas ‘pump it’. It was also used as the main theme to the french Taxi film but when i looked at the credits it just said ”main taxi theme” please please please with a cherry on the top. Has been doing my nut in for years but have only just remembered. Would be most definately appreciated.xxx

Julia (665) – I caught the Dragon’s Den advert earlier. It’s one of the tracks from Moby’s ‘Play’ album. Can’t quite recall which one though, but iTunes has a preview and you’ll probably be able to work it out.

Oh thanks Richard (667), I thought it sounded like Moby!
Oh Cherry (666) I know that the guitar solo was also on ‘Pulp Fiction’ and you can find the soundtrack on Amazon, maybe they have a preview of it?

I need to know the name of a piece of music used by the BBC a lot.
It is a hauntingly depressing piece – with a synthesized trumpet and plinky plonky music. I first heard it years ago on a programme about poverty line kids living in a skyscraper in sheffield I think.
I’ve been trying to suss it for years, with no joy.
Help!

Please help – there is a piece of music the BBC use a lot as background tracks. It’s very very depressing, with synthesized bits, and a synthesized sound like a trumpet also. I first heard it used on the programme ‘Eyes of the Child’ in 1999 about a group of kids living in poverty across the UK. Any ideas?

Lucinda (636) Do you mean Moby’s Matrix them tune? It’s otherwise known as Rob Dougan ‘Clubbed to death’ I know they use this song on X factor a lot. It should be previewed on Amazon.co.uk? I hope this is the song you mean.
