BBC trailers, and miscellaneous advert music
Posted by: Richard in BBC, Formula 1, Media, Music, PersonalI always feel quite chuffed when I recognise a piece of music in an advert, especially if it’s from somebody more obscure. Saab are, I think, using one of Aphex Twin’s tracks (”Shiny Metal Rods”, from Selected Ambient Works Vol 2), I think we all discovered a new talent in José González with the Sony Bravia adverts. Also, More4 are using “No more sweet music” from Hooverphonic’s album of the same name, for their trailer for “The Swenkas”.
“They” say that every one of Moby’s tracks from “Play”, was used in an advert in some capacity, primarily car adverts I think. Also, a real shame about ITV’s choice of music in their F1 coverage - out of context from Moby’s album, and utterly inappropriate for F1 I think: It’s too “airy” and “inspirational”, rather than down, dirty and a spot more aggressive: Bring back Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”! Even the rather lacklustre Jamiroquai track they commissioned was better.
But most recently the BBC’s music selector seems to have fallen quite sizeably for Sigur Rós, in that they’ve made huge use of various tracks from their album Takk for Planet Earth, the Wimbledon build up, and - spotted this morning - a new nature program. Funny. Well worth checking the band out though. Excellent stuff.
Update
- http://www.commercialbreaksandbeats.co.uk is a great website for more information about music on adverts that folk might find of use/interest.
Tips on searching for your advert
- Comments are now most-recent first, as that’s people are frequently most interested in.
- There are a lot of comments, so use your browser’s search feature to find the track you’re after. If it’s not on the page you arrived on, open the complete post by clicking here, and then search in your browser by hitting CTRL-F (or Option-F if you’re on a Mac) and type in a keyword about the advert and click OK!
- There may be some other links available which could be helpful.
- Remember many of the tracks you read about here are available in the iTunes Music Store
- There’s another thread on this very website with more adverts and answers!
Comments
- I’m sometimes away from a computer, and sometimes disable comments. If you’ve got an answer to somebody’s question, or want to ask one yourself, please first try to use the ‘Leave a Reply’ form at the very bottom of the page. If that’s not there, try using the Contact form on the top-right of the page to let me know the details of the track, and I’ll post them when I get back.

@472 (harriet)
The orchestral track used in the “Sunshine” trailer is called “Requiem for a Tower” by Simone Benyacar, Dan Nielsen & Veigar Mairgersso and it can be found on iTunes in three sections (three movements) on an album called “Corner Stone Cues”. Hope that helps, took me ages to find that myself.

I’d love to know the music trailer backing Griff Rhys Jones’ Mountains programme, too. Why don’t the bbc just put a list of current backing tracks on their website?

I asked the BBC who sings ‘The End of the World’ in the BBC Heroes trailer and it is Nina Gordon.

Response to 488/Laura:
One of the rather striking pieces of music used on Top Gear’s Polar Challenge is from the movie ‘Requiem for a Dream’. It’s called ‘Lux Aeterna’ composed by Clint Mansell - listen to the sample on iTunes store to see if it’s the one you were looking for…

Does anyone know the name of the music currently being used on the advert for BBC Four’s ‘Atom: Science You Can’t See’? I recognise it and know it has been used in a film recently, so it will help me remember what that was too!

Does anyone know who is singing “End of the World” in the Heroes trailers and stings on BBC2? Clip on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoSZLqyVE48.
I’ve ruled out Skeeter Davis, Julie London, Brenda Lee, Nina Gordon and Karen Carpenter. It might possibly be Nancy Sinatra, but the clip on itunes doesn’t quite match to my ears anyway.

mrs k - I’m a fan of House too, and can answer this one myself (a rare thing these days!).
As much as the Massive Attack track is a classic (and well worth digging out), it’s NOT the track they use in the UK broadcast of ‘House’. Probably licensing restrictions or somesuch.
So they have a different than in the US, which is what comes up in search engine hits. I gather it’s a specific track written for the show called ‘House’ by Scott Donaldson and Richard Nolan. Came across this myspace page with more.

Hi, Richard (site owner) here. I’ve been contacted directly with a couple of questions, and I don’t know the answers myself so figured I’d pop them up here in the hope the impressive knowledge of you readers might help find the answer:
‘Gillian’ asked “I am trying to find out who the male guitar playing singer used in the background on the bbc programme A family Wanted, if you can help I would be very grateful”
‘Kate’ asked “please can you tell me the song used for the end montages in the golf open - had the words ” burning son” in it bu cant find it. thanks”
As ever, please let me know if you want to stop receiving e-mails, but you can follow the link at the bottom of every note and unsubscribe yourself.
And in case anybody is feeling generous, I’m running a half-marathon in early September. Sponsorship is always welcome!

Thanks, and keep up the great work with the adverts!

July 12th, 2007 at 10:31 am
In response to my own question: the song is either ‘Lux Aeterna’ from the Requiem For A Dream film score, or ‘Requiem For A Tower’ which is a derivative of the first and was just used for a Lord Of The Rings trailer.
July 11th, 2007 at 3:08 pm
This one is driving me insane. The music used on the “Science You Can’t See” season ad on the BBC. Piano/strings, possible classical? Unfortunately I’ve been unable to find any videos online. Pretty sure it’s been used elsewhere.
July 10th, 2007 at 8:05 pm

Update on my request (no. 456). The music I want was played tonight at about 10.50pm on Channel 4 during a break for the TV show, The Friday Night Project. Channel 4 are showing a trailer for the film ‘K-Pax’ starring Kevin Spacey which they are showing at the weekend. The music I want to know about was the background music for this trailer.
June 15th, 2007 at 7:30 pm
I’ve heard a soundtrack on the BBC recently which I first heard for the adverts they ran I think for Rdaio 1 ‘new music’ - its a slowish number, trancy in the Mogwai/Spiritualised/Arcade Fire mode, which has a chorus of people chanting repeatedly something like ‘ah ha’ and it gets louder with a wall of sound like bank of guitars; it really builds up.
If I remember the first time I heard for the ‘new music’ ads on the BBC they showed concert footage of the crowd jumping up and down in slow motion. I think the camara was panning from the rear to the front of the crowd.
It was the background music to something on the TV very recently. Please help!!

response to comment 298 (S Pitchford)
The “hypnotic piano track” that you’re after is by “Moby” and calld “God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters”. It’s from the album Everything Is Wrong.
I KEEP hearing it on various TV trailers, and managed after an irritating amount of searching to find it. It was used at the end of Hunting The Taliban.
Enjoy!

Folks..
Do any of you happen to know what the track is that is used by Apple ipod? It sounds latin American and features rainbow colours with silhouette dancers.
Would be very appreciated
