BBC trailers, and miscellaneous advert music
Posted by: Richard in BBC, Formula 1, Media, Music, PersonalI always feel quite chuffed when I recognise a piece of music in an advert, especially if it’s from somebody more obscure. Saab are, I think, using one of Aphex Twin’s tracks (”Shiny Metal Rods”, from Selected Ambient Works Vol 2), I think we all discovered a new talent in José González with the Sony Bravia adverts. Also, More4 are using “No more sweet music” from Hooverphonic’s album of the same name, for their trailer for “The Swenkas”.
“They” say that every one of Moby’s tracks from “Play”, was used in an advert in some capacity, primarily car adverts I think. Also, a real shame about ITV’s choice of music in their F1 coverage - out of context from Moby’s album, and utterly inappropriate for F1 I think: It’s too “airy” and “inspirational”, rather than down, dirty and a spot more aggressive: Bring back Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”! Even the rather lacklustre Jamiroquai track they commissioned was better.
But most recently the BBC’s music selector seems to have fallen quite sizeably for Sigur Rós, in that they’ve made huge use of various tracks from their album Takk for Planet Earth, the Wimbledon build up, and - spotted this morning - a new nature program. Funny. Well worth checking the band out though. Excellent stuff.
Update
- http://www.commercialbreaksandbeats.co.uk is a great website for more information about music on adverts that folk might find of use/interest.
Tips on searching for your advert
- Comments are now most-recent first, as that’s people are frequently most interested in.
- There are a lot of comments, so use your browser’s search feature to find the track you’re after. If it’s not on the page you arrived on, open the complete post by clicking here, and then search in your browser by hitting CTRL-F (or Option-F if you’re on a Mac) and type in a keyword about the advert and click OK!
- There may be some other links available which could be helpful.
- Remember many of the tracks you read about here are available in the iTunes Music Store
- There’s another thread on this very website with more adverts and answers!
Comments
- I’m sometimes away from a computer, and sometimes disable comments. If you’ve got an answer to somebody’s question, or want to ask one yourself, please first try to use the ‘Leave a Reply’ form at the very bottom of the page. If that’s not there, try using the Contact form on the top-right of the page to let me know the details of the track, and I’ll post them when I get back.

Hi, did anyone see a documentary on last night on BBC Three called How Dirty Can I Get? During the programme there was a piece of dance/electro music played twice with a strong baseline and some lyrics that are hard to make out. Ive heard it on trailers for tv programmes as well before too on Channel 4 I think. Would be really grateful if someone knows what it is?

Answer for question number 503/506 from Richard regarding music used in the BBC programme ” The Tower “
The opera singers were Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman and they were singing ” Time to Say Goodbye”
I should be able to identify the piano concerto music I also heard when I find my CD (I only saw the last episode No. 6 so I do not know what other music may have been used)
Hope this helps
Jim

It can be seen on German MTV, there are teens hangin’ out all around the city, they are in the subway, on the bridge and so on, ya know, different caps of defferent places. There is one guy in a checkerred blouse sweater-like as far as I remember. Please help me find this song, IT IS SOOOO DAMN GREAT!!!

In response to Julie B 566 I think the music you are referring to is bdr soltaofrango by Bonde Do Role. Im sure someone else mentioned this piece of music several months ago on this site but in context to another advert. Like Maggie 573 I would also like to know what music the bbc used for The Restaurant trailer ? Many thanks
September 1st, 2007 at 12:18 am
In response to post 530, sorry Janey, the music from the BBC4 advert for ATOM is not from The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers soundtrack.
The trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers used a remixed version of the track “Lux Aeterna”, re-recorded with a full orchestra and choir. The song, named “Requiem for a Tower”, was made just for the trailer (it was not featured in either Requiem for a Dream or The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers) and was composed by Simone Benyacar, Dan Nielsen, and Veigar Margeirsson. In October 2006, the cue was released on the iTunes album release from Corner Stone Cues, titled “Requiem for a Tower”.

The song that starts off ‘I can see clearly now the rain has gone’ is by Johnny Nash - titled I Can See Clearly Now. It’s also been covered by a band called The Hothouse Flowers.

This is in response to a question raised in your number 389
I am the producer/director of the film.
Contact me via my email, if you can. I guess you are talikng about the music used over the long intro sequence culminating in the air the air sequence.
I don’t know if I am using this site correctly but I hope this reaches you.
Tell me… do you have the early version of my film or the later version narrated by Richard Todd?
Kind Regards
Stan
Note from Admin - I’ve passed on a note to the author of comment 389. For others, the film here is ‘Shackleton’.

I would be extremely grateful if someone can help me with a piece of music from around 1984 played recently in a re run of Cold Case? It’s synth electro pop in the genre of A Flock of Seagulls/Howard Jones and the only lyrics I could catch from the male vocalist were “now i’m living in limbo oh- oh,oh-oh”.
I have never heard it before as I lived in Japan for three years so there is a gap in my musical knowledge, For example it was nearly 7 years before I heard/saw the video of Status Quo “in the army now” and thats one I wish I hadn’t.
cheers if anyone can help and I will watch this site to see if I can help anyone out…
