BBC trailers, and miscellaneous advert music
Posted by: Richard in BBC, Formula 1, Media, Music, PersonalI always feel quite chuffed when I recognise a piece of music in an advert, especially if it’s from somebody more obscure. Saab are, I think, using one of Aphex Twin’s tracks (”Shiny Metal Rods”, from Selected Ambient Works Vol 2), I think we all discovered a new talent in José González with the Sony Bravia adverts. Also, More4 are using “No more sweet music” from Hooverphonic’s album of the same name, for their trailer for “The Swenkas”.
“They” say that every one of Moby’s tracks from “Play”, was used in an advert in some capacity, primarily car adverts I think. Also, a real shame about ITV’s choice of music in their F1 coverage - out of context from Moby’s album, and utterly inappropriate for F1 I think: It’s too “airy” and “inspirational”, rather than down, dirty and a spot more aggressive: Bring back Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”! Even the rather lacklustre Jamiroquai track they commissioned was better.
But most recently the BBC’s music selector seems to have fallen quite sizeably for Sigur Rós, in that they’ve made huge use of various tracks from their album Takk for Planet Earth, the Wimbledon build up, and - spotted this morning - a new nature program. Funny. Well worth checking the band out though. Excellent stuff.
Update
- http://www.commercialbreaksandbeats.co.uk is a great website for more information about music on adverts that folk might find of use/interest.
Tips on searching for your advert
- Comments are now most-recent first, as that’s people are frequently most interested in.
- There are a lot of comments, so use your browser’s search feature to find the track you’re after. If it’s not on the page you arrived on, open the complete post by clicking here, and then search in your browser by hitting CTRL-F (or Option-F if you’re on a Mac) and type in a keyword about the advert and click OK!
- There may be some other links available which could be helpful.
- Remember many of the tracks you read about here are available in the iTunes Music Store
- There’s another thread on this very website with more adverts and answers!
Comments
- I’m sometimes away from a computer, and sometimes disable comments. If you’ve got an answer to somebody’s question, or want to ask one yourself, please first try to use the ‘Leave a Reply’ form at the very bottom of the page. If that’s not there, try using the Contact form on the top-right of the page to let me know the details of the track, and I’ll post them when I get back.

Following on from 633…
For all those interested in the piano music used in the BBC’s ‘The Restaurant’, I’d like to say that it’s not ‘Le Onde’ by Ludovico Einaudi as suggested, although that is an excellent piece of music. I’m a big fan of Einaudi and I did initially think it could be his work due to the minimalist style.
I’ve just listened to an excerpt from ‘Comptine d’un autre été - L’après-midi’ by Yann Tiersen from the ‘Amélie’ soundtrack, as suggested by someone else, and that sounds spot on to me. I’m just buying it from iTunes now but I’m 99% sure that it’s the right piece.
I could be wrong - sorry if I am…

In response to 632 and as a follow up to 645, the xylophone music on THE RESTAURANT is Hans Zimmer’s “You’re So Cool” which was based on Carl Orff’s Gassenhauser. You’ll probably recognise it from the film “True Romance” (it’s pretty much played throughout that).

640 Astrid, The music from the new Peugeot 308 advert was specially composed by a guy called Erwann Kermorvant. I dont know what the piece of music is called but the advert is titled “Winds of Change”. Hope this helps.

Answer to 632 - the restaurant xylophone music. It sound like Gassenhauer by Carol Orff to me but I’m not 100%.

Can anyone tell me the name of the music used recently for BBC3 programme montage. It was also used a bit on BBC Breakfast to go over speeded-up film of some children playing in a nursery. It’s got a fairly fast beat and is heavy on trumpets.

Bekkbo the song on the M&S ad with the train (if that’s the one you mean) is Ain’t She Pretty by Buddy Greco.
Suddenly I feel like Peter Pan is still annoying me but I think it was just written for the ad itself.

Guy,559.Success! I’ve found the piano music, it’s “Le Onde” (The Wave), by Ludovico Einaudi. Now I’ve heard it all the way through again, it’s even better than I remember! You can hear it on Youtube along with others, try Smokey Joes attempt (he’s only 15) wow.!! Happy listening

The music I’m thinking of from The Restaurant is the soft plinky xylophone track that induces instant nostalgia and always comes in towards the end of th programme when they’re doing a review. Is this the piece people are after, or does anyone know the name of it? Thanks.
September 27th, 2007 at 10:05 pm
the music to The Restaurant is - Comptine d’un autre été l’après-midi - Amelie Soundtrack. It’s stunning
September 27th, 2007 at 9:53 pm
Guy, 559 - I know its been a while now, but I too have been trying to find that piano music since it featured in Dancex back in August, despite asking in various chat forums and trawling numerous websites, I’ve yet to find out what it is. Did you have any luck? Please answer if you did, would be very grateful. I’ve heard it since on Xfactor aswell, can’t get it out of my head! Thanks.

September 26th, 2007 at 1:52 am
The music from The Restaurant is not Yann Tiersen. I have his discography and it not in any of these albums. I have submitted the question to the BBC via thier website and hope they will reply.

Several people are asking about the music used for the programme the restaurant. I would also like to know what the music is that is used at the begining of the programme, can anyone help me? I keep hearing snippets on various programmes.
September 25th, 2007 at 3:52 pm
Thanks Richard, I do have the ‘Amelie’ soundtrack and the piece used in ‘The Restaurant’ is not on the album. I am guessing its on another of his albums perhaps another film soundtrack. I will try and look into his other albums, I strongly believe its Yann Tiersen because of the minimilistic nature of the piano piece, he often adopts this for his piano compositions.
To Lelita, its definately not Erik Satie, who although is minimilist also, the music used in the restaurant is far too contemporary for Satie.

Almu (comment 620) - Re. the trailer to ‘Lilies’ - I took a quick listen, and I can’t be absolutely sure, but it sounds a lot like KT Tunstall’s guitar work on ‘Suddenly I See’ from the album ‘Eye on the Telescope’.
September 25th, 2007 at 10:39 am
Regarding the music from ‘The Restaurant’ - Whilst I don’t watch the programme regularly myself, I have caught excerpts at times and the music I’ve heard has almost always been music by Yann Tiersen, specifically the music from the film ‘Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain’, or ‘Amelie’ to the rest of us:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0211915/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amélie
Whilst the Amelie soundtrack is really delightful (I have a copy) - and probably what a you’re after - I wouldn’t suggest you rush out and buy any other music by Yann Tiersen without getting a proper listen first. I made the mistake of presuming it was all along a similar vein, and left a concert rather disappointed. My review here:

Regards,
Richard.

bekbo - You can go to apple.com/ipod and click on the iPod Nano advert. You can then click through to the iTunes store and get the details of the song, but note that the ‘Buy it from iTunes’ takes you through to the US store.
Details are it’s by ‘Feist’ (off the Album ‘The Reminder’) and is called, you’ll be shocked to hear, 1234. It is available in the UK iTunes store too.

Hi, does anyone know what that lovely piece of piano music is, used in the bbc’s programme ‘The Restaurant’ near the end of the programme, it sounds like it could be by Yann Tiersen, similar to the music used in the film ‘Amelie’. Thanks.
