BBC trailers, and miscellaneous advert music
Posted by: Richard in BBC, Formula 1, Media, Music, PersonalI always feel quite chuffed when I recognise a piece of music in an advert, especially if it’s from somebody more obscure. Saab are, I think, using one of Aphex Twin’s tracks (”Shiny Metal Rods”, from Selected Ambient Works Vol 2), I think we all discovered a new talent in José González with the Sony Bravia adverts. Also, More4 are using “No more sweet music” from Hooverphonic’s album of the same name, for their trailer for “The Swenkas”.
“They” say that every one of Moby’s tracks from “Play”, was used in an advert in some capacity, primarily car adverts I think. Also, a real shame about ITV’s choice of music in their F1 coverage - out of context from Moby’s album, and utterly inappropriate for F1 I think: It’s too “airy” and “inspirational”, rather than down, dirty and a spot more aggressive: Bring back Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”! Even the rather lacklustre Jamiroquai track they commissioned was better.
But most recently the BBC’s music selector seems to have fallen quite sizeably for Sigur Rós, in that they’ve made huge use of various tracks from their album Takk for Planet Earth, the Wimbledon build up, and - spotted this morning - a new nature program. Funny. Well worth checking the band out though. Excellent stuff.
Update
- http://www.commercialbreaksandbeats.co.uk is a great website for more information about music on adverts that folk might find of use/interest.
Tips on searching for your advert
- Comments are now most-recent first, as that’s people are frequently most interested in.
- There are a lot of comments, so use your browser’s search feature to find the track you’re after. If it’s not on the page you arrived on, open the complete post by clicking here, and then search in your browser by hitting CTRL-F (or Option-F if you’re on a Mac) and type in a keyword about the advert and click OK!
- There may be some other links available which could be helpful.
- Remember many of the tracks you read about here are available in the iTunes Music Store
- There’s another thread on this very website with more adverts and answers!
Comments
- I’m sometimes away from a computer, and sometimes disable comments. If you’ve got an answer to somebody’s question, or want to ask one yourself, please first try to use the ‘Leave a Reply’ form at the very bottom of the page. If that’s not there, try using the Contact form on the top-right of the page to let me know the details of the track, and I’ll post them when I get back.

Hey everyone, does anyone know what the song in that Heroes advert is - where it’s got little clips of Heroes parts in-between other shows, and there’s this song constantly goin “Oooo oooo oooo! Oooo oooo oooo!” It goes into the ooo bit just as Hiro Nakamura is jumping up and down in his office, waving his arms - am DESPERATE to find it. Thanks

Dear All,
Could anyone please tell me the track used for the trailer of Dragons’ Den on the 5th November 2007. Many thanks.

Just another update from the site owner… As ever, remember you can unsubscribe from receiving notifications by checking the details at the bottom of every e-mail. I really don’t want folk to feel they’re being spammed, so just click away and you’ll not receive any more e-mails.
I’ve just opened up another post on the subject of adverts (with a few new discoveries of my own to get things going). This original thread will stay open for as long as it’s useful, but it is starting to get a bit unwieldy as it approaches a massive 700 comments! Here’s the URL:
http://www.leyton.org/diary/2007/11/06/more-on-tv-trailers-and-advert-music/
As ever, a huge thankyou to everybody who’s returned to update folk on their music discoveries. Keep the questions coming too!

hey.
just found the answer to at least one persons questions, specifically knoll, post 664.
The piano music that you are talking about that is used at the recap at the start of the restaurant is a piece by Dmitri Shostakovich. I believe it is Waltz 2 from his jazz suite.
Hope this helps

Hi Paul
Posting 687
Bet my bottom dollar that the track you are after is “you’re so cool” by Hans Zimmer. You can hear a snippet on itunes. it’s been turning up all over the place for the last year and I finlly tracked it down here on these boards.
Just noticed you mentioned motorways - which might mean you are after Moby’s track but if it is the xylophone piece then I’m sticking with Zimmer.
Hope this ends your search!

This is amazing. Further to my note below, the music in Sky Movies ads is in fact “The Sea and the Sky” by Future Loop Foundation. But if you listen to it on You Tube and then the Sigur Ros tune noted below you’ll be amazed by the similarity. Put both together and you could have one of the best atmospheric song scores of the past decade. Listen and be transported to another world !!

Re my coment 678..think I’ve solved my own query. Reckon I’ve found the music played as background for Sky Movies “Join the Evolution” adverts…sounds like Sigur Ros and “Vidrar vel til loftarasa”. Whatever, it is something special to listen to. the best version on You Tube comes under “Final Fantasy”. take listen and let me know if you agree that it is used by Sky and others. Enjoy !!

It’s also been used on an advert on tv and sadly i cannot even remember what advert it was but it’s just a piece of music on a xylophone……………. please help im going insane!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone, I was looking for a piece of music that had been played on BBC Ones “The Big Day”, I even tried 2580 but the piece was so short that it wasn’t recognised.
I also heard it on “The Restaurant” and a few other shows, so decided to google for it. Searching “what is that song with the xylophone bbc big day” brought me here, and reading every post I managed to find it, post #632 sounded very familiar, and I have now found the track, it is “Hans Zimmer - You’re So Cool” and I even had in on my PC, from the True Romance CD (Track 1).
Thanks all, I have been looking for this since July and am now very happy…

October 14th, 2007 at 9:41 pm
Please help - there is a piece of music the BBC use a lot as background tracks. It’s very very depressing, with synthesized bits, and a synthesized sound like a trumpet also. I first heard it used on the programme ‘Eyes of the Child’ in 1999 about a group of kids living in poverty across the UK. Any ideas?
October 14th, 2007 at 8:44 pm
649 & 663:
Waterloo road trailer track is ‘Golden Skans’ by The Klaxons, I posted on the BBC points of view messageboard as I was looking for it and someone got back to me.
October 14th, 2007 at 7:33 pm
I need to know the name of a piece of music used by the BBC a lot.
It is a hauntingly depressing piece - with a synthesized trumpet and plinky plonky music. I first heard it years ago on a programme about poverty line kids living in a skyscraper in sheffield I think.
I’ve been trying to suss it for years, with no joy.
Help!
October 13th, 2007 at 10:27 pm
Thanx sooooooooooo much julia (669). That song has been the bane of my life for a very long time. And for anyone else who would like to know the songs called ‘misirlou’ and its by ‘dick dale and his del-tones.’
Thanks again.xxx
October 13th, 2007 at 5:41 pm
Oh thanks Richard (667), I thought it sounded like Moby!
Oh Cherry (666) I know that the guitar solo was also on ‘Pulp Fiction’ and you can find the soundtrack on Amazon, maybe they have a preview of it?
October 13th, 2007 at 3:32 am
To Georgia - music for climate challenge advert is P.S.I by Oskar.
October 12th, 2007 at 11:32 pm
Julia (665) - I caught the Dragon’s Den advert earlier. It’s one of the tracks from Moby’s ‘Play’ album. Can’t quite recall which one though, but iTunes has a preview and you’ll probably be able to work it out.
October 11th, 2007 at 10:20 pm
Hi everyone,
I know this isn’t strictly a song from an advert but i was hoping some one could help me. I’ve wanted to know the name and artist that does the amazin guitar solo to back the black eyed peas ‘pump it’. It was also used as the main theme to the french Taxi film but when i looked at the credits it just said ”main taxi theme” please please please with a cherry on the top. Has been doing my nut in for years but have only just remembered. Would be most definately appreciated.xxx
October 11th, 2007 at 9:20 pm

Thanks again Paul!
October 10th, 2007 at 2:37 pm
Wow - what can I say Paul - a huge, huge thanks for this!!
If you only knew how long I’ve been tracking this down, with numerous emails to various BBC departments and postings on several music query websites, and then you go and solve my puzzle within minutes of posting here!! It’s so difficult to find pieces when they don’t have lyrics isn’t it?! And to think that I have a couple of Moby albums (18 and Play), but not this one, well at least not until 5 mins ago when I’ve just placed an order for it from Amazon!
Mega thanks once again - my life is just that bit more complete today!

To Nick comment 658 …motorway music …an excellent description as i recoginised it without seeing the prog just checked out the snippet..it is God Moving Across The Face Of The Waters by Moby..used in countless ads, the end of Heat by Michael Mann woth Pachino/De Niro ( different arrangement, slightly more expansive)…and also arranged and played be me as wellas an intellectual excercise as i recognised some of the sounds used in it by Moby coming from a Yamaha SY99 synth…it isnt a real orchestra. If you are interested in my version email me at [e-mail withheld] and I will mp3 it to you
glad to hep Paul Burns
October 10th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
I don’t know if anyone can help with this but there’s a great piece of music used at the end of the 3rd and final program of the BBC’s ‘Secret Life of Motorway series. It’s right before the very end of the program over the top of Tony Blair and John Prescott flying over a motorway in a helicopter.
This piece is used alot on BBC programmes, and was also used over the end title sequence of last night’s (October 9, 2007) ONE Life programme on BBC1.
It is a repetitive piano piece *filling out into a fuller orchestra) which sounds a bit like Philip Glass but I’m fairly sure it isn’t since I;ve been through most of his music. Someone has also suggest Steve Reich but I haven’t found anything yet.
If anyone can help put me out my agony, then I’d grately appreciate it since this is a hauntingly beautiful melody which I’d love to have on my iPod!
You can listen to an audio snippet of it via this link (audio recording from Secret Life of Motorway)
http://www.spectroscopynow.com/FCKeditor/UserFiles/File/Temp/Secret_Life_Motorway_Music.WMA
Thanks in advance somebody - please help it’s driving me mad not knowing!

October 5th, 2007 at 10:53 pm
I am desperate to find the music used in recent weeks by SKY MOVIES as background to their movie trailers. i haven’t heard in past couple of weeks though. Pretty sure it’s pure instrumental and is also used by other channels/progs. Will post a more specific comment if i hear it played again.
October 4th, 2007 at 9:04 pm
I have the all of the Einaudi & Tiersen albums and some of Paul Glass. The music from The Restaurant is none of these. Have posted Q to BBC but no repsonse. Any help would be great as its driving me crazy.
October 4th, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Following on from 650:
Ian Says:
Following on from 633…For all those interested in the piano music used in the BBC’s ‘The Restaurant’, I’d like to say that it’s not ‘Le Onde’ by Ludovico Einaudi as suggested, although that is an excellent piece of music. I’m a big fan of Einaudi and I did initially think it could be his work due to the minimalist style….
Hi All, Let me count myself among you all as one dying to find this tune - I too have listened to the Amelie soundtrack, and I agree with Ian, that this too sounds like both Le Onde and the latter track.
However I think its not. Unless… there has been a rearrangement. I have recorded from the TV show and played both possibilities side-by-side, and they do not fit.
As with someone else on here I too have emailed the BBC ….. 2 weeks ago.
Good Luck
Austin
