BBC trailers, and miscellaneous advert music
Posted by: Richard in BBC, Formula 1, Media, Music, PersonalI always feel quite chuffed when I recognise a piece of music in an advert, especially if it’s from somebody more obscure. Saab are, I think, using one of Aphex Twin’s tracks (”Shiny Metal Rods”, from Selected Ambient Works Vol 2), I think we all discovered a new talent in José González with the Sony Bravia adverts. Also, More4 are using “No more sweet music” from Hooverphonic’s album of the same name, for their trailer for “The Swenkas”.
“They” say that every one of Moby’s tracks from “Play”, was used in an advert in some capacity, primarily car adverts I think. Also, a real shame about ITV’s choice of music in their F1 coverage - out of context from Moby’s album, and utterly inappropriate for F1 I think: It’s too “airy” and “inspirational”, rather than down, dirty and a spot more aggressive: Bring back Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”! Even the rather lacklustre Jamiroquai track they commissioned was better.
But most recently the BBC’s music selector seems to have fallen quite sizeably for Sigur Rós, in that they’ve made huge use of various tracks from their album Takk for Planet Earth, the Wimbledon build up, and - spotted this morning - a new nature program. Funny. Well worth checking the band out though. Excellent stuff.
Update
- http://www.commercialbreaksandbeats.co.uk is a great website for more information about music on adverts that folk might find of use/interest.
Tips on searching for your advert
- Comments are now most-recent first, as that’s people are frequently most interested in.
- There are a lot of comments, so use your browser’s search feature to find the track you’re after. If it’s not on the page you arrived on, open the complete post by clicking here, and then search in your browser by hitting CTRL-F (or Option-F if you’re on a Mac) and type in a keyword about the advert and click OK!
- There may be some other links available which could be helpful.
- Remember many of the tracks you read about here are available in the iTunes Music Store
- There’s another thread on this very website with more adverts and answers!
Comments
- I’m sometimes away from a computer, and sometimes disable comments. If you’ve got an answer to somebody’s question, or want to ask one yourself, please first try to use the ‘Leave a Reply’ form at the very bottom of the page. If that’s not there, try using the Contact form on the top-right of the page to let me know the details of the track, and I’ll post them when I get back.

Hey. Could someone please tell me what the song off the recent BBC4 advert is?
It’s a really crazy jazz song, and it’s off the advert for the action films that BBC4 are showing. Its got like Schwarzenegger, Stylone and people on it all in retro fonts and colours.
The song goes so crazy towards the end, and I absolutely love it.
Does anyone know what it is?
Thanks

Tom Skinner - The music you are seeking (Have I Got News For You, classical piece) is the Dance of the Knights (also known as “Montagues & Capulets”) from Prokofiev’s ballet “Romeo & Juliet”.
Hope this helps.

Hi all - don’t know if any of you know but a while ago there was an advert documenting all the programmes for ITV (it think it was - or channel 4???) and one of the shots was of a young kid in an orange hoodie. The accompanying track is this really lovely tune and I’m dying to find out what it is… any ideas? Sorry so vague!!!

Hi, does anyone remember the BBC trailer from a few months ago that featured lots of children dancing to a TV programme, singing the word three?! and at the end a girl says ‘three’ but holds up 2 fingers instead of 3?!
Would be very grateful if anyone could tell me what the trailer was for, or any more information about it.
Thank you!

Hey, I just found the answer to my own question!
In case anyone else has been wondering the music in the latest Dirty Sexy Money trailer is Chungking, “Love is here to stay”
April 11th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
there’s another trailer for Dirty Sexy Money around at the moment, with a different piece of music (NOT “North American Scum”) - can’t hear lyrics but it’s in 6/8 and the last bit of the trail has a bassy electronic sound (a bit like Goldfrapp’s Ooh Lah Lah but not that) - can anyone ID please ?
April 11th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
The tropicana advert was done by DDB london Ad company. I guarantee the version was recorded especially for the Ad. It was recorded by Nina Walsh. Regards djshax

Can anyone help me with a piece of music I don’t know the name of - I’m afraid it is pretty vague! It was used in a bbc tv trailer for David Attenborough’s series “Life in the Undergrowth” and I also heard it again recently on tv - I think it was the “I’d do anything” talent show (but I may be wrong!). It is lovely with a soaring chorus of female (black) voices and sounds as if it could come from a stage show but I don’t actually think it does! If anyone knows what I am going on about please, PLEASE can they tell me the name of the music and where I can get it from!
April 9th, 2008 at 10:47 am
Wow, Frank, I think you could be on to something with Francoise Hardy being behind the Tropicana Smoothies advert “Catch a falling Star”. There’s a rather 60’s version you can listen to (free of charge) here, which to my ear sounds very similar
http://tinyurl.com/5urvu5
But the advert is much more ’sultry’, and has a more american-like accent, so I await the verdict of the many people who’ve asked about this one!
April 9th, 2008 at 10:37 am
825-When I first heard the music for the Tropicano ad I immediately thought it was by Francoise Hardy from way back in 1964 and it can be found on Amazon on “All Over the World”.

The Tropicana Advert song is “Catch A Falling Star-Nina Walsh” it was done especially for the Ad but may be put on general release

Does anyone know the song off the advert for Guitar Heroes 3.
The advert is the one where Slash (i think) comes out of the other guy who is playing the guitar.
Thanks.

Anyone know the name of the piece of classical music that played in the background on the Beeb’s “I’d Do Anything” show on 22/03/08, from 50.57 - 52.47? It’s a classical piece, with piano and violins. I’d love to find the name of it.

John - the music used for the Dirty Sexy Money trailer is by LCD Soundsystem - called ‘North American Scum’.
March 20th, 2008 at 12:13 am
If only I’d found this place sooner. Radio 5 Live’s trailer for coverage of the Cheltenham horse racing festival last week had a piece of music on it voiced over by John Inverdale. I’d be delighted if anyone could identify it.

Gavin (808) - I’m pretty sure the song you are looking for is called ‘Hometown Glory’ by Adele.
March 16th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
repeating what gemma said (776):
she sounds like possibly natasha beddingfield or imogen heap…
word might be “round my hometown” or “in my own town”
would be grateful, cheers

March 9th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Hi,
Can anyone help - there’s a piece of fast upbeat, 70’s disco-y style music being recently played on the BBC drama trailers on the TV - sounds like the band ‘Chic’ or ‘Sister Sledge’ or someone similar, and its doing my head in! Its played on a trailer with Philip Glenister in it I think - something with either Ashes to Ashes, Clocking Off and Torchwood in the trailer.
Sounds like female singers. Hope someone can nail it for me - Ive spent two hours on HMV’s website looking and I have to stop!
