I think missionaries have the most important job in the world. They follow the Great Commision given. Yes we need engineers and teachers etc. and i value them greatly, but we will all die one day and we need to know where we will go. Missionaries adress man's BIGGEST need- Our need for salvation because we are all sinners- God provided a way of redemption- Jesus Christ.

While I am not at all religious and equivocal about the role of missionaries, I met a Nigerian couple today and from them learned how Mary Slessor is venerated in Calabar. For 40 years she lived in Nigeria, living with the people in the native style and playing a huge role in raising the status of women. Another thing made much of by my hosts (and a Nigerian blogger, Chxta) and also mentioned by Gwayne above, was how she stopped the practice of putting twins in 'the evil forest' to die. Personally, I would far rather see Mary Slessor on a bank note than the vast number of Scots establishment figures who became famous essentially for looking after themselves.

Mary Slessor may not be an ideal person to use on a scottish note but for the children she saved, i'm sure she does! Without her influence, a lot of twins would have been left to die! so I think she deserves to have her logo on the 10 pound note

I got a Mary Slessor Clydesdale tenner in my change, which is unusual for Oldham, so I was just looking her up. A quick look at another website showed she had a lot of courage: she got some gang members into Sunday school by letting them swing a metal weight right near her face and not flinching. Also, the missionary work included setting up hospitals and giving out smallpox vaccine.

[...] The Scottish Blogging Roundup is another. It’s a general roundup, with a primary focus on politics, but plenty of non-political entries to lighten the tone! I even featured last year with my Mary Slessor ramble (you know, the woman who stares out from the £10 clydesdale note), which was nice! [...]
