As the previous post indicated, we’re now in Sydney (see picture to the right for proof!). Lovely city it is too. It might well be Autumn, but I managed to get a little sun burnt yesterday (Only on the back of my knee, for some illusive reason).
This morning it was Climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which had been recommended to me by my brother (Peter) and his girlfriend (Jen), my long-term friend (Stew) and Dave and Sharon. So, with FIVE recommendations, I had to do it. Frances wasn’t taken at all. A bad experience on the Millenium eye last year, and a bit of scare in Fuji-Hakone on the ropeway there meant that - on taking just one close up look at the bridge - Frances was resolutely opposed to the idea of climbing up it.
However, I thoroughly enjoyed myself whilst Frances stayed in bed. An excellent climb lead (Michelle), and a good natured group of fellow climbers meant we had a fun time and enjoyed a stunning view across the harbour. Truly spectacular experience, topped - quite literally - by a great feeling of exilleration at the top. Plenty of interesting facts along the way too. My favourite of which is the story that apparantly quite recently, the bridgeclimb crew found a shopping trolly full of empty beer cans wedged to the top light pilon one morning. Some student prank most likely, but what a stunt. Beats knicking traffic signs and sticking road cones on statues heads!
We’re off to the Blue Mountains tomorrow to pet a Koala (apparantly, New South Wales has made it illegal to pick them up now), but we’re looking forward to it none the less.
Sydney is certainly a nice city. Shame a bad experience on the railway (it was rush hour, but far too few ticket machines and surly staff) cast some what of a dim light on things this afternoon. Is it purely an Anglo-Saxon/western thing that we can’t run railways? The ticket inspectors in Japan bow to you when they enter and leave the carriage….
Well, moaning about public transport is such a work-stressed out person thing to do. And I’m on holiday. Woo! Haven’t read a newspaper or watched the news in, what, 36 hours…

Well, Rich - you had five recommendations to climb the bridge, as we told you to as well!! Glad you enjoyed it.
Plus, you know where to go if you want to cuddle a koala like I did and not just stroke it
Thinking (enviously!) of you both,
Sha and David xx
