Well, it was something of a surprise - at least initially - to see that Gary Ebersole had rejoined a niche database company called ANTs Software. Gary is known to me from his previous life as CEO of Clustra, an extremely innovative distributed DBMS. Unfortunately for us, Sun Microsystems snapped them up, and promptly buried the software deep into iPlanet. I’ve always felt they didn’t quite get what they’d bought, and probably didn’t want to upset Oracle in the process.

ANTs big product is a database that has extremely high performance under very high contention load. This is an area where current databases always take out locks with the idea of preventing contention. They’ve presumably challenged this assumption and tackled it from a different angle to get this order of magnitude performance.

There’s an interview with Gary over at TechTarget which is worth a read, and some Technical Documents available for download too from ANTS.
