Since moving to Glasgow, I’ve been on the hunt for a few key things. A decent place for Sushi (found with Ichiban - at least in the short term), and a decent pub. On this latter count, I’d been somewhat nervous as I’m a big fan of real ale, and that boils down to Deuchers or 80 /- - neither of which really quite hit the mark for a London Pride/Landlords sort of bloke.
Now there is Tennents off of Byres Road, but it’s in the west end: We do go out there occasionally, but not as often as in the centre of town. Also, whilst it’s superb on the beer front (10+ real ales), it’s a bit basic inside, and Frances sometimes feels a bit, er, isolated as one of only a few women there. Definitely a blokes pub.
So, I’m pleased to report that right now, Babbity Bowster hits the nail for central Glasgow pubs serving a variety of real ales that we can sit and relax in. It’s got a great atmosphere, usually has a couple of guest beers on (I seem to recall they even had Timothy Taylor’s Landlords once).
The food is excellent: We’ve sampled the Haggis, neeps and tatties, as well as a couple of their puddings. They do have a full restaurant there too, but we’ve not yet had a chance to try it out.
Did I mention the beer garden? One of only a few in Glasgow. Definitely one to visit during the summer.
All in all, if you’re visiting Glasgow, you can’t go wrong visiting here. If you’re visiting Frances and I, you’ll probably visit here as it’s our favourite pub right now. If you don’t know me, you might even bump into me there (which may or may not be an encouragement to you) - we’ve been there quite a bit already, and have already bumped into a few family and friends.

[...] Next Saturday is the second Scottish Blogs meet, and this time it’s in one of my favourite pubs in Glasgow, so I’ve no remaining excuses not to attend this time. There had been some risk of us either going away on holiday, moving house, or being in some other part of the UK, but with things now settled for later this month, I’m going to be in town, and I’m sure Frances will enjoy the opportunity to go off and do some shopping.
