I’ve just seen a job specification up here in Glasgow which reads:

You should have the ability to work in an efficient manner, handling multiple support queries at any given time. You will need to be a camellia of circumstance dealing in an efficient and professional manner…

Sorry, what? A camellia of circumstance?

Yes. Right. Small evergreen shrub of circumstance. Very zen. Well, very something.

But, see, now I’m wondering what DID they mean to say? chameleon? “You will need to be a tropical old world lizard of circumstance with an ability to change colour?”

You will need to be a lizard of circumstance who can change colour and blend into the background? Hide when threatened by a PHB? Lick your eyeballs?

Even being gracious to one of the definitions of chameleon an “inconstant person” isn’t the first thing I think of when the word chameleon is bandied about. It’s hardly even a compliment.

Good grief. HELP! This is what we’re dealing with up here!

    Richard,

I think they probably meant a “camellia” of circumstance, but just forgot the quotes.

I hope that clears things up.
