I’ve recently got back in touch with my friend Emma, who I’ve known since I worked in Duesseldorf, Germany, and have been intrigued to hear that, following her MBA, she is now working for The Freeplay Foundation. It’s an admirable charity, with the impressive goal “to enable sustained delivery of radio information and education to the most vulnerable populations via self-powered radios. Working mostly in Africa, where affordable energy is scarce or non-existent, the Freeplay Foundation collaborates with professionals in education, health, agriculture, peacemaking, and voter education - all sectors where radio can play a vital or even life-saving role.“.

The radio they distribute is “… self-powered [and] designed specifically for children living on their own, distance education and other humanitarian projects. Robustly constructed to operate in the harshest of conditions and climates, the Lifeline radio is rugged, colourful, easy to use, receives excellent AM/FM/SW reception and plays for many hours on wind-up energy or solar power.”.

I wish Emma all the very best in her endeavors, as it’s an excellent project to be involved in, and I’m sure will make a big difference to the people of Africa.
