I’ve just come across a typically thought provoking article by Richard Dawkins, Creationism: God’s gift to the ignorant. In it he elegantly talks about how Scientists relish understanding mysteries, rather than the Creationist delight in exulting in them, and striving to keep them mysterious.
The default “you cannot explain X therefore it must have been created by God” bandied about in Creationist/Intelligent design arguments is - I think - frustratingly small-minded. I’ll take growing our understanding of the process by which life - in all its splendour - came about any day, if the alternative offered is to wallow in ignorance and resort to catch-all defaults. Relish mysteries for the opportunity they provide, rather than hiding behind them.
