The silly season seems to be over, and politics is gradually returning to the news agenda, and close to the top of the list is going to be this Governments ludicrous notion that a national ID card, with a database register managed by the oh-so-competent-at-IT-projects Home Office.
I received an e-mail earlier from Phil Booth, who’s behind the very successful no2id.net website, reminding supporters that it’s on ongoing battle.
If you have even a slight concern that the Government really does not have the ability to manage an IT project of this scale, sensitivity and importance (Remember the passport agency fiasco? The Child Support Agency mess? The Tax Credits saga? Even Even my MP, a member of the Public Accounts committee is worried), let alone the ludicrous notion that a piece of plastic in our pockets will make us safer from terrorists, somehow solve illegal immigration, and reduce the threat of big brother (stop laughing at the back there!).
I’ve Highlighted my concerns, written to my MP, analysed his interesting response, and plugged no2id.net to friends and family.
Read on for more about what you can do, oh, and Tony Blair as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz… Surely worth doing for that alone… Or maybe not…
Hello, and thank you all again for signing our successful pledge - over 11,000 to date. I hope you will excuse this one-off reminder / request, it could save you £10 (at least) and a lifetime of hassle…
Now that the Home Office is beginning to spin the ID scheme again, we are encouraging everyone who has not yet done so to get writing. At this stage, in the run up to the final vote in the Commons, it is one of the most important things you can do.
Please do take the time to do at least one of the following:
1) Get in touch with your local NO2ID group, and send an open letter to your local paper. Or write a letter yourself. In Cambridge, our multi-signatory letter made the front page of the local evening paper and got a response from the Home Secretary himself.
2) In association with TheyWorkForYou.com & WriteToThem.com, we have provided a simple online lobbying tool at http://mps.no2id.net - it should take no more than a few minutes of your time, but please make your feelings known to your MP. Even if they voted against ID cards before, it is important that we encourage them to turn up and vote against again.
3) Spread the word. Check out our new Flash movie at http://eclectech.co.uk/swizz.php and pass it on to all your friends, mailing lists, etc.
We’re working hard to defeat this monstrous Bill in Parliament, but we can’t do it without your support. Please act now.
Onwards and upwards!
