Today’s Guardian has an excellent series of interviews with the few remaining survivors of the first world war. One of the most notable is also close to home, for Harry Patch lives in the residential care home in Wells, Somerset that my mother now runs.

I spoke to her to say I’d read the interview, and she told me he’s appearing in a number of television programmes over the next few weeks as we approach armistice day on November 11th, and rememberence sunday. He’s doing a remarkable job given the huge amount of press attention on these remaining veterans, and especially considering his age.

Harry’s story is fascinating and thought prov0king - as they all are in this remarkable group. We’d all do well to listen to their words whilst we can, as well as buying a poppy this year.
