There is a significant problem with using the loft in our new house, as an office. It’s that there are plenty of places for spiders to hide, sharpen their fangs, grow to a suitably menacing size, and practice their scuttling. Therefore, it’s not necessarily going to be a conducive environment for me, as I feel the best place for a spider is inside a working dyson vacuum cleaner…

So this weekend we’ve been making a serious stab at sorting it out. Replacing the expanded polystyrene ceiling tiles (a mistake - as the existing ones were just a little grubby), and sorting out the partition walls. We’ve also pulled up the carpets, and vacuumed every inch. Once we finish the tiling and the walling, we’ll be off to get a fresh underlay and carpet to put down. All this will hopefully reduce the places for the spiders to hide: We figure they prefer dark, dusty and grubby corners than fresh, clean, light areas. A regular vacuum too should help minimise hiding spots.

All of which I hope will make the loft a better place to work, as I’ll be up there on a regular basis in a couple of weeks time as I start a new piece of contract work I’m very much looking forward to. I just need to get myself a nice chair ;-).

How big are you in relation to a spider. They also catch flies. I never took you for a wuss!!

No good you living in my cottage, we share it with the spiders and its clean.

[...] In the ongoing saga of the loft-as-office project, I’m pleased to report that this weekend my books finally made their way up. They’re sat directly across from me, and for the first time in many a year, they’re actually on bookshelves. A wonderful invention I suggest all book lovers contemplate. Books just don’t really look so good piled up or in boxes. [...]

[...] For the last year or so I’d been using the loft as an office. However, it was getting problematic for a number of reasons: It was cold and silly to heat; It was a long way up those loft stairs in your socks; It was a long way away from the coffee machine. Most importantly of all, however, was that it had a lot of big spiders, and it was short for a 6′2″ person: I couldn’t stand up properly. [...]
