I read today that SETI@Home are moving over to BOINC. I went off SETI@Home some time ago, preferring using my CPU for things such as protein folding, which would have more useful, beneficial, and realisable benefits such as understanding Alzheimer’s disease.
BOINC provides a generic platform, and enables people to choose where their CPU is applied. If you’re after extra-terrestial signals, so be it. But if you prefer more terrestrial based pursuits, you can simply sign up and apply your CPU there. So I figured I’d take a look at BOINC, and downloaded the client. I’m pleased to see that the various projects include projects as diverse as Climate change processing, disease analytics, and searching for pulsars.
There’s surely something there for everybody, so I’m trying a few different projects and seeing how my G5 processor copes with the load. Give it a whirl yourself. There’s a client available for almost all of the popular compute platforms.
