I’ve just completed what I’ve dubbed a “commando shopping trip” into the centre of Glasgow to pick up the last few bits of Christmas shopping. I hate shopping at the best of times, and at Christmas it’s doubly bad for all the queues and ill-tempered folk around It’s a time to be happy, “they” say. Judging by the look on peoples faces this morning, I’d suggest the actual “festive cheer” and “good will to all men” Christmas spirit is almost beautifully negated by the ill-tempered shopping process we all seem to hate. Does anybody enjoy Christmas shopping???

So my approach was: Draw up a list. Get a train (after the morning rush). Go to specific shops to buy specific things before it gets too busy in town. Pay with cash, or Chip & PIN (which is often just as quick, assuming you can work out which way the damn card goes in. All the machines seem to be different. So much for consistent user experiences). Move on to next shop. Buy coffee. Get home. Do some work.

So, I’ve finished, bar a couple of “foody” items we’ll pick up tomorrow. There’s a growing sense of relief building in me that it’s almost time to kick back and relax, and - I’m afraid to say - have a general air of smugness at the poor sods who are still battling around the increasingly busy shops, hating the entire process, no doubt full of what I suppose is “festive cheer”.

This is why I use amazon for all my Christmas presents (oh, and living abroad might also have something to do with it). ;) Hope you have recovered from the trauma and the elbowing and jostling by now.

I go Christmas Eve afternoon, everybody else assumes it will be busy - but don’t let on.
