I love reading, but every now and then I find I’m no longer compelled to pick up a book. Usually this is because I find one or two books harder to get through than normal. I then start picking up a newspaper, or a magazine, and find that more enjoyable. So the books fall by the wayside.

The last couple of months, helped of course by moving in to a new house and therefore having less free time, plus being rather busy at work has meant I’ve been in a book/website lull for a while. However, over Christmas and the new year, I’ve been given some books that I’ve started reading with vigour, and am trying to compel myself to write for my own pleasure on a more frequent basis as I do enjoy the process.

Anyway, here are the books I’m currently reading:

  • Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s “Meat”. As you may be aware, I’m a huge fan of Hugh’s, enjoying everything he produces from River Cottage. This book, which I’m currently reading, guides the reader through everything they ever wanted to know about appreciating, buying, preparing and cooking good quality, ideally locally produced meat.
  • Britain’s Last Tommies - Autographed by Harry Patch, one of the soldiers in the book (and a resident at the residential care home in Wells my mother manages), this tells the story of the remaining first world war veterans.
  • Does anything eat wasps? - A wonderful book ideal for dipping in and out of. Answers, from the famous Last Word from the back page of The New Scientist, a scientific “Notes and Queries” that certainly interests, puzzles and amuses. And now I know whether you really can live on beer alone, and how fat you need to be to be bullet proof… And as for wasps, well…
  • Banksy: Wall and Peace - A book by the infamous graffiti artist Banksy. This was perhaps the most surprising present given who I received it from, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading about his exploits as he makes many very astute political points in a way that demands your attention, and gets it.

Four books at a time? That’s impressive, Richard.

It would be impressive if I was reading them simultaneously!

I’m actually only reading “Meat” at the moment, but “dipping” into “Banksy” and “Does anything eat wasps?” as curiosity (and the format of the book) dictates.
