Late post I realize, but nice topic. As I explained to my 10 year old daughter, " I keep the computers going".... and so she explains my job to her friends....

Neat.
cd

Richard,

An interesting explanation of what System Administrators (SAs) do. However, I feel some discussion of why experienced SAs should automatically be licensed to carry and use powerful automatic weapons in the workplace would really round the whole piece off.

You might make some reference to “cluebats” , “LARTs”, possibly “lusers” and certainly alt.sysadmin.recovery.

Best Regards

Ben

See, as a midwife, everyone says, "Oh you deliver babies then"...sigh

I naturally then have to
a) ignore them because I hate the word "delivery" or
b) try and explain what I actually do on a daily basis (yes, occasionally helping a mum give birth is an option) or
c) say "yes" if I really can't be bothered explaining!

Whew........!

Just think, I started out with upright typewriters and ended up working on a mainframe. And I still don't understand electricity, but marvel everytime I hit a switch.

"...However, IT jobs suffer from being relatively new to the world. Job titles such as Accountant, Nurse, Lecturer, Postman are all well-understood..."
Not so sure about that, mind you. I'm looking at accountancy job adverts just now, and, despite having worked as an accountant for three years, I still can't figure out what exactly a lot of them do, never mind trying to explain it to someone else! And I would think there's a lot that nurses and postmen do that I don't know about. Probably most people's understanding (mine, anyway) of what nurses do doesn't go much beyond "looking after people in hospital" - similar, I suppose, to being happy with the explanation that you, Richard, "make sure that computers are working ok".
