How bloody frustrating. I’ve found my knives, which I had somehow managed to misplace during the move from London up to Scotland. Only a few weeks ago I went out, having figured they were lost, and spent a good chunk of money on some new ones.

The story so far…

Until know I’d figured they were in storage somewhere, but when we had our various items delivered they didn’t turn up. As we’ve settled in, a few other items seemed to have disappeared too: A few pans, my whisk. Nothing as significant as my knives of course, but frustrating to not have them.

So today we were around at the flat we’d stayed in until recently, clearing out a few last things. We’d been there for 18 months, and I’ve no idea of the hours I’ve spent rooting through boxes there, and in garages, trying to find my knives.

Allow me to explain: They’re good knives, and they make cooking a whole lot easier. A few were well chosen and much appreciated gifts as well. To lose them felt a bit rude. Of course, the huge waste of time searching everywhere, and an extra stress on things.

So as we went through a cabinet in the kitchen that was full of various bottles and so on, I spotted a dish I recognised. Ah! I thought, maybe we’ve found a few lost items. To my horror, behind that dish was a tea-towel, clearly wrapping something. I knew immediately they were my knives, because it’s always sensible to wrap knives carefully in a tea-towel.

So in the last four weeks I’ve gone from a small pairing knife - the only one I’d managed to find to date, to more knives than I know what to do with. Try carving with a pairing knife, and you’ll know how useless it is as a general purpose knife. So now I have two carving knives, two steels, and two large chef’s knives. Of course I won’t be able to return the new ones as they’ve been sharpened (of course) as well as used.

Ironic too that only last week I finally gave up any hope of finding my old knives, when I threw out the packaging my new knives had come in. Plus that they’d been only a metre away from me all the time I’d been cussing that I’d lost them.

Argh!

Glad they’ve turned up though. Look at it this way, you’ll never need to buy another knife. Ever! (Glad too that I’m off the hook because I felt your thoughtful eye on my kitchen equipment more than once. I mean, since I have no good knives of my own, I could have been tempted, eh?) :-D
