So, bloke from Scottish Water finally turned up today. In the morning, rather than the afternoon as indicated. But I can hardly be grumpy at that. In fact, that’s where the grumpiness finishes - it’s all good news (of a sort) from there onwards… He was certainly an affable chap. Sort of looked like the currently lead from Taggart, and had a friendly and helpful nature that I’ve found is quite often the case with many workmen here in Glasgow, despite perhaps an otherwise gruff demeanour.
Anyway, after doing some listening, and poking, he turned off our water, did some more testing, and concurred that it wasn’t ours. So he turned his attention to the neighbours… And after a good bit of cleaning of their stop-valve (didn’t look like it had been lifted in years), suggested it sounded like theirs was leaking. Turning their water off as well as ours would hopefully enable the water to drain away, and then re-appear when one was switched on. After a 10 minute read of the paper, he returned to see that the water had drained away quite quickly. Back to normal in fact, bar a bit of mud. Enabling their valve brought the water up again very slowly.
Haven’t spoken to the neighbours yet, but we’ve a good relationship with them, and I’m sure between us we can get it sorted before the garden becomes entirely like a swamp, or our sub-floor fills with water. The Scottish Water chap did manage to isolate almost the precise location of the leak, so hopefully it won’t even be that expensive…
