I’m very fortunate to be right on the doorstep of Pollok Park. It’s a great place to run, with no cars to worry about and beautiful scenery. Until today, it’s been my exclusive running location. However, as much as it’s delightful, it was getting a little repetitive, so I thought it was high time to try something new. After yesterday’s excursion to the Tramway, I was reminded how many long, straight, quiet stretches of pavement exist, so headed out on a run to try and get through four of the five parks that are close by.

The result was a new 5.2 mile route which was great fun, in a very different way from Pollok Park. I benefited from the fact that it was 9am on a Sunday morning, so most people were still in bed, so fewer cars were on the road. It was good fun, and I’ll certainly be doing it again. If you’re a Nike+ user, you can check out the route details if you’re interested!. The next step is 5 parks in an hour - Bellahouston park isn’t that far away, and should be easy to work in for the longer distance runs I intend to start doing in the next few months.

In other running news, I received my entry form for the Great Scottish Run which is taking place in September. I decided some time ago that was my goal to mark a full year of running, and I’m getting quite excited by the prospect. I’m even thinking I might enter the Edinburgh Great Run in early May as a build-up towards that (and get some experience in running in a road race). Still undecided though as there’s a lot going on over the next few months here, and getting over to Edinburgh from Glasgow might be more of a hassle than the relaxed build-up I think I’d need.

I also need to decide on a charity to run for, or even if I’m going to run for a charity at all. Part of me is thinking it’s a personal ambition to run this, rather than a real burden on me, which sponsorship sort of requires.

Oh, and for any Nike+ folk out there, there’s a Nike+ challenge that’s just started today which would be fun to have more people take part in. Drop me a note, or give Gordon, who’s organised it, a shout. We’re not super-atheletes by a long stretch, but folk running something around 5k 3 or so times a week will be right at home, and it’s about accumulated miles rather than speed.

If you decide on a charity, put it on the blog please.

As my father was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer a few years back (he’s made a full recovery now), I decided to run for the Prostate Cancer Charity to help raise awareness.

I’m awaiting a fund-raising pack, so I’ll be sure to advertise ways to sponsor me when the details come through in the next week or two.
