One last thing we’ve still to arrange ahead of our wedding is where to go for our honeymoon. We’ve got just the week after our wedding off, so we don’t really want to go too far. So I was wondering if any readers had any suggestions for somewhere to go?
We’re obviously after something special, and I’m planning to book it through a travel agent so that (I hope) we’re flagged in our bookings as being on a honeymoon and perhaps get any free treats that might then come our way. The package being covered as a whole by travel agent insurance/bonds is also good: Arranging it ourselves (which we normally do) doesn’t get that, and this is one holiday I want to go well or get a decent refund/replacement on if there are any problems.
Frances doesn’t like sand, but we want somewhere warm. We’re also keen for things to see and do whilst we’re there. Sitting on a beach and sipping cocktails might be nice for a day or two (sand not withstanding), but something interesting to see and do is important. Greece/Crete appeal, as does Morocco. I’m appalled to say that, whilst I’ve been to almost every other large European country, I’ve not yet been to Spain or Portugal. Tuscany in Italy is also very appealing.
I don’t want to spend too long at the airport or on a plane - I’ve come to really hate the travel part of travelling having spent a large part of a year commuting every week between London and Glasgow in 2004/5. So short-haul is what I’m thinking. Even a UK based holiday isn’t out of the question.
Answers via the comment form, or drop me an e-mail. Please take it as read I’ll know all the (in)appropriate jokes.

We’re off to Paphos in a couple of weeks for our honeymoon (only 6 months after the wedding - I had to start a new job the week we were planning to go!). So i’ll let you know what that’s like.
If you’re thinking about Spain, Barcelona is beautiful this time of year, but still on the chilly side of nice. The south should be nice - one of the southern resorts should give you the option of either beach (a bit warmer, although sea swimming is out!) or hiring a car and heading for the Andalucian mountains.
I’ve never been to Morrocco, but i’ve heard people rave about it. Equally, Turkey is meant to be quite nice if you avoid the overly-touristy bits.
I have to say though, that if I was planning it again (and we weren’t using my wife’s convenient discounted tickets from her employer - an airline - i’d choose Tuscany. I’ve never been, but every foody bone in my body tingles at the thought of it!

Direct flights to Granada.
How Special? - this is out of this world and if they know you are honeymooners the couple who were there at the same time where treat like King and Queen.
We stayed, but could only afford three nights - but boy was it worth it. You have the gardens all to yourselves after they have shut to the public at night. Unbelievable.
The rest of the week - Mojacar on the coast about 35 miles from Granada.
The Parador there is much newer, cheaper and in a great location, you can watch the sea and sand and never step on the sand from either your balcony,
big wide terrace and swimming pool and the sparrows beg for your crumbs.
The fish on this coast is so fresh
If you go - have a Sangria in the Parador Indoor Courtyard and smile in contentment.

I suggest either Andalucia or Morocco - both reviewed on my web site.

Sorry to dampen Mavis’s enthusiasm, but we were in Granada at the time of this posting, and the Parador at the Alhambra is fully booked for ages ahead so no chance there. As for Mojacar, we went over last weekend from Granada, having visited there 20 years ago and loved it, and were really disappointed to discover the whole coast is almost one long “urbanization” and the very last place to be romantic. ( See my reviews of Granada in a few days time on my site)
My suggestions - if you’re going to fly try to avoid a lo-cost airline, to reduce the stress.
If you want something different how about Scandinavia. Fly to Stockholm, have a day or two there, then get the Silja line ferry to Helsinki and spend a couple of days there before flying back direct or crossing back to Stockholm. The ferry is like a mini cruise. We had one of the posher cabins and it was bigger than our bedroom at home, and cheaper than an equivalent hotel room in either of the cities. It leaves about 6pm so you’ve got time to stay on deck to admire the scenery as you sail out through the Swedish archipelago, then have a fantastic smorgasbord dinner etc. In the morning you can have breakfast then go out again to view the Finnish archipelago and watch the arrival into central Helsinki at about 9am. The Viking Line also do this trip daily so they provide competition, but the Silja is much the best.

Naples, Italy and surrounding areas are fascinating. Pompeii, Capri, Sorrento. All have loads to see and do, and are definitely not your usual holiday.
Congratulations!
