Another quality article by Jay Rayner at The Guardian, on the news that Britain eats out more than any other European country. Jay’s provocative article points out that we as a nation don’t seem prepared to stump up money for decent food, and aren’t prepared to complain when we receive poor quality food or service.
A great read, especially for solid criticism like this: “The Dry Dock is a pub in Netherton, which is not the arsehole of the world, but it’s bloody close.“. Jay goes on to say “Now a good steak pie is a thing of beauty. Done well, it is a classic. Done badly, it is gastronomic torture, and at the Dry Dock, now under new ownership, it was done very badly indeed. After eating it I didn’t just want to wash the taste from my mouth; I wanted counselling.“
And solid advice, we should all heed: “We can complain more often, something the British are terribly bad at. We can refuse to pay service where it is not deserved. We can favour the good and boycott the grim. We can, in short, exercise good taste“
A critic who certainly doesn’t mince his words when things aren’t up to scratch is one to listen to. You might also be interested in my previous link to Jay’s review of McDonalds.
