I’ve been thoroughly impressed by Channel 4 news’ News from Iran programmes this week. With the US and Iran seemingly set on a collision course over the thorny subject of nuclear enrichment. The US seems to see it as a threat to regional stability, in a region already unstable as a result of their invasion of Iraq. The Iranians see it as an inalienable right. That a supposed diplomat is using such terms as “meaningful consequences” is scary, but then it is coming from John Bolton, who doesn’t strike me as somebody versed in diplomacy.
So it’s excellent timing and execution from the Channel 4 news team as ever, allowing some unique in-depth coverage and exposure to a country we could all benefit from understanding. Some interesting facts that the programmes have drawn attention to are that Basketball is huge in Iran, and even has some US basketballers playing, and the exclusive that The US is approaching Iran to help with Iraq, although much of the rest of the media doesn’t yet seem to have attached as much significance to this as I’d have thought it merits.
Jon Snow, and their excellent international news editor Lindsey Hilsum have been presenting nightly articles opening up a country that is seen as a mystery in the west.
It underlines my opinion that Channel 4 news remains the most diverse, thorough, investigative, challenging and above all interesting news programme in the UK at the moment. Long may it continue, and long may the team continue to receive the recognition and awards they rightly deserve
