I have finally got around to joining Liberty this morning. It’s an organisation I’ve felt I should support for a few years, but never really got around to doing the paperwork.

It’s a coincidence, of sorts, to hear the news that Police may be dispensing ‘instant justice’ (their words!) - it’s more like something from a kids comic (Judge Dredd anyone?).

Liberty are making the right public noises - that this is a recipe for disaster - because future political options seem to be decreasing by the day. John Reid is manoeuvring for the forthcoming Labour leadership (like another Scot, and an uncompromising and arrogant one at that, is going to be popular in ‘middle england’), and let’s face it - the Tories won’t be much different in this regard: I don’t expect they’ll mount much of an opposition to this proposal.

It’s increasingly clear we have an authoritarian government, with little chance of improvement, so supporting organisations such as Liberty, that vociferously campaign for democracy, freedom and fundamental human rights, is something I think we should all seriously consider if we’re not to become the servants of the government, rather than the other way around
