As my friend Stewart Claydon notes, I’ve recently implemented Google AdWords on leyton.org. Right now, it’s more of an experiment - to see whether the adverts really are relevant, are suitably unintrusive, and add up to a useful source of revenue to help towards the hosting costs. Adverts are limited to the article page: I’ve not been able to find a way of putting them on the main pages without the adverts being too intrusive.
I’d certainly be interested in any feedback as to whether regular readers think they’re useful, or get in the way. E-mail me directly or post a comment below. Of course, money talks too!
If you’re interested, the Click-thru rates I’m seeing so far are nothing special, but the adverts seem to be relevant and even possibly add to my postings, such as where I review the k700i, or review Microsoft SQL Server. Where it can’t work out what I’m on about, the ‘good cause’ adverts seem to take precedence, which seem to be awfully US-centric.
So, please feel free to click through on them. It turns into money for me in the long run. Just don’t abuse it (not that I imagine anybody really wants to), as Google are wise to possible abuses, and clamp down hard
If they’re unobtrusive, and the money worth bothering with, I’ll probably keep them. If they just get in the way, I’ll get rid of them: They were very easy to implement, so it’s just as easy to get rid of them. If you’re interested in other ways of making money in your weblog or site, and need help doing it, then there is a very good overview of options here.
